Svengoolie is filling July with invisible spies, giant teenagers, a swamp monster, and one very famous vampire hunt. This month’s MeTV lineup includes Invisible Agent, Village of the Giants, Swamp Thing, and The Night Stalker, plus a new House of Svengoolie takeover from the Sven Squad.

The classic horror and sci-fi movie block begins on Saturdays at 8/7c on MeTV. Let’s learn more about this month’s offerings.

Saturday, July 4: Invisible Agent

The month begins on the holiday with Invisible Agent, the 1942 Universal film starring Jon Hall, Ilona Massey, Peter Lorre and Sir Cedric Hardwicke. Directed by Edwin L. Marin and written by Curt Siodmak, the film brings H.G. Wells‘ invisibility idea into a wartime spy story.

This time, the invisible man is Frank Raymond, the grandson of the original invisible man, who is pulled into World War II espionage after enemy agents come looking for his grandfather’s secret formula. It is a little different from the earlier Universal monster entries, but it still belongs to that same invisible-man family tree.

Saturday, July 11: Village of the Giants

Everett Collection

On July 11, Svengoolie airs Village of the Giants, the 1965 sci-fi film from producer-director Bert I. Gordon. The cast includes Tommy Kirk, Johnny Crawford, and Beau Bridges, with a young Ron Howard appearing as a young boy genius whose experimental “goo” causes some serious trouble.

The movie is loosely connected to H.G. Wells’ The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth, but this is very much a 1960s teen sci-fi oddity. When a group of rebellious teenagers get their hands on the growth formula, they turn into giants and take over the town.

Saturday, July 18: House of Svengoolie and Swamp Thing

The Sven Squad takes over on July 18 with House of Svengoolie. Sarah Palmer appears as Gwengoolie, Scott Gryder as IMP (also known as Ignatius Malvolio Prankerstein), and Bill Leff as Nostalgiaferatoo for a dungeon takeover.

The featured movie is Swamp Thing, the 1982 film written and directed by Wes Craven. Based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, the film stars Adrienne Barbeau, Louis Jourdan and Ray Wise in the story of scientist Alec Holland, whose experiment transforms him into the swamp creature.

Saturday, July 25: The Night Stalker

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER (aka NIGHT STALKER), (key art), Darren McGavin, 1974-75

Everett Collection

July wraps up with The Night Stalker, the 1972 made-for-TV horror film starring Darren McGavin as reporter Carl Kolchak. Produced by Dan Curtis and written by Richard Matheson, the movie follows Kolchak as he investigates a string of murders in Las Vegas and begins to suspect the killer may be a vampire.

The film became one of the most important TV horror movies of the era. It led to the sequel The Night Strangler and later the series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, making McGavin’s rumpled reporter a cult favorite for generations of horror and mystery fans.
