The sci-fi movie Logan’s Run turns 50 on June 23, 2026, and it still feels like one of the most distinct futuristic films of the 1970s. Based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, the film imagines a sealed-off world where youth is everything, and no one is supposed to live past 30. Michael York starred as Logan 5, a Sandman who starts out hunting Runners before learning the truth about the society he serves.

The movie also featured Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Roscoe Lee Browne, Farrah Fawcett-Majors, Michael Anderson Jr., and Peter Ustinov. 50 years later, only a few members of the main credited cast are still alive. In honor of its anniversary, let’s catch up with the main cast members.

Michael York played Logan 5, a Sandman who hunts Runners in the domed city where citizens are expected to report for Carrousel when they turn 30. Logan is sent to find Sanctuary, the rumored refuge for people trying to escape, but the mission changes the course of his life.

By the time Logan’s Run opened, York had already built an impressive film career. He played Tybalt in Franco Zeffirelli‘s Romeo and Juliet, Brian Roberts in Bob Fosse‘s Cabaret, D’Artagnan in The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, and Count Andrenyi in Murder on the Orient Express. He also worked onstage with the National Theatre under Laurence Olivier before becoming one of the more recognizable British actors of the 1970s.

York continued acting long after Logan’s Run, with later credits including Jesus of Nazareth, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Road to Avonlea, Gilmore Girls, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and the Austin Powers movies, where he played Basil Exposition. He has also done voice work for projects including Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, The Simpsons, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

In 2013, York publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with amyloidosis, a rare disease that had originally been mistaken for bone cancer. He underwent a stem cell transplant at Mayo Clinic in 2012, and later moved to Rochester, Minnesota, with his wife, Pat, to be closer to his doctors.

Jenny Agutter (73)

Jenny Agutter played Jessica 6, the young woman who helps Logan escape the domed city and search for Sanctuary. Agutter had been acting since childhood before Logan’s Run. She appeared in the BBC’s 1968 version of The Railway Children and the 1970 film version, both times playing Roberta. She also starred in Walkabout and won an Emmy for the 1971 TV film The Snow Goose. After Logan’s Run, Agutter continued working in both British and American projects.

She appeared in The Eagle Has Landed, Equus, which earned her a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress, An American Werewolf in London, Amy, and Child’s Play 2. She later appeared as a member of the World Security Council in The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Agutter has also remained active on television.

Since 2012, she has played Sister Julienne on Call the Midwife. In 2022, she returned to one of her most beloved roles, appearing in The Railway Children Return, reprising Roberta more than 50 years after the original film.

Michael Anderson Jr. played Doc, the surgeon Logan visits at the New You facility. It was also a family connection for Anderson, since Logan’s Run was directed by his father, Michael Anderson. Anderson was born in Hillingdon, England, and started performing at a young age. He studied drama and ballet at Arts Educational Schools in London, began appearing on live radio and television by age 8, and also danced with the London Festival Ballet, now known as the English National Ballet. His first major American film was The Sundowners in 1960. He later appeared in Disney’s In Search of the Castaways, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Sons of Katie Elder, and Major Dundee.

On television, he starred as Clayt Monroe in the 1960s ABC Western series The Monroes, about five orphaned siblings trying to keep their family together in Wyoming. Anderson continued working in film and television into the 1990s, with later credits including The Martian Chronicles, Fantasy Island, CHiPs, Highway to Heaven, Rent-a-Kid, and Elvis Meets Nixon. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1988 and retired from acting in 1998.
