TCM is now halfway through their 31 Days of Oscars lineup of the Academy’s greatest, all leading up to the 98th Academy Awards airing on March 15 at 7 pm. In March, you can enjoy greats like the dancing musical Guys and Dolls (1955), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) starring Elizabeth Taylor, the Dustin Hoffman gender-bending great Tootsie (1985), and many more.

Then, later in the month, the network celebrates Irish American actor George Brent as TCM’s Star of the Month, starting on Tuesdays starting March 17.

HONEYMOON FOR THREE, George Brent, 1941

Everett Collection

Sought out for roles as a romantic leading man to Hollywood’s most famous actresses (several of whom he married, many more of whom he reputedly had affairs with). As if to make up for lost time from its Oscar-themed programming, TCM showcases its retrospective of Brent’s films on Tuesdays beginning in primetime and continuing into daytime all Wednesday. There’s a lot of ground to cover, too, as TCM treats you to 48 of the prolific actor’s films.

The offerings in this lineup include four with his second wife, Ruth Chatterton: 1932’s The Rich Are Always With Us and The Crash; and 1933’s Lilly Turner and Female (all on March 17). On March 31, Brent stars in Honeymoon for Three (1941) with his fourth wife, Ann Sheridan. Also featured in this event are all five films Brent made with costar Barbara Stanwyck: 1932’s So Big, and The Purchase Price; 1933’s Baby Face (all on March 17); The Gay Sisters (1942), and 1946’s My Reputation (both on March 31). Actor Kay Francis is featured with Brent in six 1930s films (three each on March 17 and 24).

Then there are the whopping 11 films Brent made with real-life paramour Bette Davis, all of which are featured this month, including their most famous collaboration, 1939’s Dark Victory (March 31), the moving and Oscar-nominated story of a Long Island socialite (Davis) diagnosed with a brain tumor and her romantic involvement with the doctor treating her (Brent). Just like Bette Davis’ eyes, your Irish eyes will be smiling throughout this TCM George Brent event.
