What To Know

  • During his appearance on Hot Ones, Daniel Radcliffe named his favorite actor from the Harry Potter set.
  • Radcliffe admired this person’s ability to keep the atmosphere light and casual off-camera, yet deliver outstanding performances as soon as filming began.

While a guest on First We Feast’s Hot Ones to promote his upcoming project, the NBC comedy series The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, Daniel Radcliffe succumbed to the pressure of the searing, tongue-destroying hot sauces and answered a question that has been on the minds of Harry Potter fans for years: Who was his favorite Harry Potter actor to work with?

While chatting with host Sean Evans, a visibly pained Radcliffe was asked, “Without overthinking about it, what stands out as the best acting you got to witness firsthand?”

Radcliffe, who over the course of the series got to work alongside film legend Richard Harris, two-time Oscar winner Dame Maggie Smith, and Royal Shakespeare Company veterans Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, and Emma Thompson, was surrounded by a level of acting pedigree rarely assembled in a single production, learning firsthand from some of the most respected and classically trained performers of their generation. But he also had a favorite.

“I always love actors that make it look easy,” said Radcliffe, “Michael Gambon particularly. Michael Gambon, obviously, rest in peace, incredible man. He would f*ck around all the time. He would never stop until ‘action’ had been said. Sometimes he would be trying to make me laugh.”

“Some actors love to dress the whole process up in mystique and being an enigma. Michael Gambon…you’d get to set, and he’d be like, ‘What’s the shot?’ And you’d be like, ‘Oh, it’s camera here, Michael. So you’re there in front of it, but you’re looking that way.’ And he said, ‘Oh, what is this? B.O.H.N.A.R.” I was like, ‘Sorry, what’s that?’ He was like, ‘Back Of Head, No Acting Required,'” recalled Radcliffe.

Radcliffe also had many kind words for Imelda Staunton, who played Harry’s nemesis, Dolores Umbridge, who was also quite chatty with the cast and crew until the cameras began rolling, then she could snap into character.

“It’s the people who can do the work without making you constantly aware of how hard they’re working are always the people that seemed the coolest,” explained Radcliffe.

They then got to The Bomb hot sauce, and Radcliffe’s world was destroyed.
