Do You Remember This ‘M*A*S*H’ Character Who Disappeared From the Show?
What To Know
- Captain John “Ugly John” Black, played by John Orchard, was an original M*A*S*H character who disappeared after the first season.
- Orchard appeared in 11 episodes, mainly in supporting roles, and later returned to M*A*S*H in Season 8 as a different character, Muldoon.
If you were there for the very beginning of M*A*S*H, you probably remember a few characters who didn’t stick around very long. The series we all came to love was slightly different in its first season, and a few characters faded away before the show found its rhythm. One of the most puzzling early departures was Captain John “Ugly John” Black, the Australian anesthesiologist who appeared mainly in the first season and then disappeared without much explanation.
British actor John Orchard played Ugly John and appeared in 11 episodes, mainly during Season 1. He was part of the original ensemble introduced in the pilot episode, working alongside Hawkeye, Trapper John, Radar, and the rest of the 4077th gang. Unlike many of the main characters, he didn’t have big storylines of his own. His nickname was meant to be ironic in the original Richard Hooker novel, where he was described as handsome. On television, the joke was played a little more literally.

Then, after the episode titled “Showtime,” Ugly John was simply gone. There has never been an official, on-the-record explanation for why the character was dropped. Early M*A*S*H went through a lot of behind-the-scenes tinkering as producers figured out which characters worked best and which ones didn’t quite fit. Several Season 1 regulars were written out around the same time, including Spearchucker Jones and Ho-Jon.
For actor John Orchard, the role remains the part he is best remembered for, even though it was relatively brief. Before M*A*S*H, he had appeared in films like Ice Station Zebra and The Thomas Crown Affair, often in small supporting roles. After leaving the show, he continued to work steadily in small parts in television and movies throughout the ’70s and ’80s. His filmography included guest spots on series like Hogan’s Heroes, Get Smart, and Columbo, but to classic TV fans, he will always be the original anesthesiologist of the 4077th.
Interestingly, Orchard did return to M*A*S*H years later, but not as Ugly John. He appeared in a Season 8 episode called “Captains Outrageous,” playing a completely different character named Muldoon, an Australian military police officer who frequented Rosie’s Bar. M*A*S*H would go on to run for 11 seasons and become one of the most beloved shows of all time, but its earliest episodes still feel a little different from what came later. Offscreen, Orchard lived in California for many years before eventually returning to England. He passed away in 1995 at the age of 66.
