What To Know

  • Pamela Adlon began her career as a child actress in the early 1980s.
  • She became widely recognized for her voice work, most notably as Bobby Hill on King of the Hill.
  • Adlon later achieved critical acclaim with live-action roles and creative work.

Before millions of viewers came to know Pamela Adlon as the unmistakable voice of Bobby Hill on King of the Hill, she was already building a résumé as a working child actress in the early ’80s. Born Pamela Segall in New York City on July 9, 1966, Adlon grew up in a creative household; her father, Donald Segall, was a television writer and producer, and she began doing voice work around the age of nine. Acting quickly followed, and by her mid-teens, she was landing steady television and film work.

One of Adlon’s earliest screen appearances came in the cult favorite Grease 2 in 1982, where she played Dolores, the younger sister of one of the Pink Ladies. Not long after, she popped up on several popular TV shows of the era, including a recurring role as Kelly Affinado on The Facts of Life during the 1983–84 season. She also made early appearances on shows like Night Court and later Star Trek: The Next Generation, steadily proving that she could hold her own in both comedy and drama.

In her 20s, she leaned into voice work. Her husky, expressive voice made her a natural fit for animated characters, especially young boys and tough-talking girls. Throughout the ’90s and early 2000s, she voiced memorable characters on animated favorites such as Recess, Pepper Ann, Jungle Cubs, and the video game series Pajama Sam.

Everything changed in 1997 when Adlon was cast as Bobby Hill on King of the Hill, and it earned Adlon a Primetime Emmy Award in 2002 for the episode “Bobby Goes Nuts.” The series ran for more than a decade and has since returned with new episodes, giving longtime fans another chance to hear that familiar voice.

In live action, Adlon found another wave of success with shows like Californication and Louie, where she also worked behind the scenes as a writer and producer. That creative momentum eventually led to Better Things, the semi-autobiographical FX series she co-created, starred in, wrote, produced and directed. The show earned widespread critical praise and a Peabody Award. In recent years, she has continued acting in films and television, including directing her feature film debut, Babes in 2024.

Off-screen, Adlon is also the mother of three daughters, including actress Odessa A’Zion, who has been drawing increased attention lately for projects like Marty Supreme and I Love LA.
