Classic Movies airing on TV the week of January26-February 1, 2026 movie collage
Everett Collection

Every week, countless fantastic classic movies air on cable and over-the-air TV networks — but it’s so easy to lose track of what’s on when (or never find out in the first place). That’s why we’ve put together this day-by-day guide to classic movies on TV, with detailed listings of everything playing on primetime and beyond. Use it to find when your favorites are airing … and maybe discover some new favorites, too.

This week, look forward to TCM’s tribute to Rob Reiner, which will include screenings of The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me and This Is Spinal Tap; a double shot of films by Cooley High auteur Michael Schultz; and a screening of Cool Hand Luke just in time for what would have been Paul Newman’s 101st birthday. Plus, tune in for airings of Rebel Without a Cause, Witness, How Green Was My Valley, The First Wives Club, It Happened at the World’s Fair, Dances with Wolves, Shane, Taxi Driver and many more.

Pretty Woman

AMC, 10:30pm

PRETTY WOMAN, Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, 1990

Everett Collection

The 1990s launched with the first of the Julia Roberts-Richard Gere pairings, in a film that — despite a dicey premise that wouldn’t earn a pitch meeting today — has become the stuff of rom-com legend. Making the most of Roberts’ stellar comic chops and leggy, coltish beauty paired with Gere’s upper-crust looks and polished savoir-faire, Garry Marshall’s Pretty Woman told the tale of Vivian Ward, a hooker with a heart of gold and gobs of street smarts, and repressed businessman Edward Lewis, who sees a diamond in the rough in his paid companion. And, even more so, in the potential she has to bring true acceptance, adventure and romance to his life. There may never be a better final line, rom-com or otherwise, than Roberts’ “She rescues him right back!” And the film earned the fledgling star a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination, cementing her status as a sought-after actor.

Rob Reiner Tribute

TCM, beginning at 8pm

THE PRINCESS BRIDE, Director Rob Reiner, 1987

20th Century Fox Film Corp./Everett Collection

Turner Classic Movies will honor the life and work of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner with a special programming tribute celebrating his influential career. The movie marathon will begin with a premiere presentation of The Princess Bride, one of Reiner’s most beloved and enduring films, before continuing with a curated selection of his most beloved works, including When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me and This Is Spinal Tap. “With This is Spinal Tap [1984], Rob began an extraordinary 11-year run that rivals the finest directors in Hollywood history: He made The Sure Thing, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men and The American President,” said TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. “The profound sense of loss we’re all feeling is heightened by Rob’s lofty standing in Hollywood. He was universally loved inside the entertainment industry. I did not know him as well as I would have liked, but he always made me feel like we had been pals for decades. Rob’s character was defined by the qualities we see in those films: kindness, decency, humor, compassion and, most of all, a belief in humanity,” stated Mankiewicz.

Dirty Talk: When Daytime Talk Shows Ruled TV

ABC, 9pm, Series Finale!

The third and final part of the docuseries, “Adapt or Die,” explores how daytime talk shows were reaching new levels of sensationalism by the late 1990s. Driven by viewers’ insatiable appetite for sex, violence and conflict, many shows lowered the bar, with The Jerry Springer Show leading the race to the bottom.

Gentleman’s Agreement

MOVIES!, 8pm

GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT, from top, Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, John Garfield, Celeste Holm, 1947,

20th Century Fox Film Corp./courtesy Everett Collection

This 1947 Best Picture winner from director Elia Kazan, which was controversial in its day, tackled antisemitism, including its effects in employment and housing discrimination. Gregory Peck plays a journalist who reluctantly goes undercover as Jewish to write a magazine story on antisemitism. He digs in deeper when he experiences the prejudice himself and realizes what Jewish friends and acquaintances had to go through. Kazan also snagged an Oscar for Best Director, his first of two (the second was for On the Waterfront, seven years later).

Limited Series: Rise of the 49ers

AMC, 9pm

Tom Brady won Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he’s currently a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. But San Francisco is where the legendary quarterback’s roots in the game grew deep. “My family had season tickets to the San Francisco 49ers. That alone made me fall in love with football,” says Brady, who wanted to be quarterback Joe Montana throwing to wide receiver Jerry Rice. In the two-night, four-part docuseries that Brady both narrates and executive produces, he dives into the history of the team. Episodes include interviews from Niners greats Montana, Rice, Steve Young, Ronnie Lott, Randy Cross, former owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. and many others. And yes, Brady fulfills his boyhood dream of tossing a ball to Rice.

Black History Month: Directed by Michael Schultz, Part 1

TCM, beginning at 8pm

COOLEY HIGH, Corin Rogers, Glynn Turman, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, 1975

Everett Collection

Cooley High. Car Wash. Krush Groove. These are some of the films of influential director and producer Michael Schultz, a member of the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, whose work is explored by TCM on this month’s first two Sundays. Known for comedies that also convey social commentary, Schultz had his first real commercial success in that format with Cooley High (1975), which begins tonight’s programming. The story chronicles the friendships and dreams of high school seniors living in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project. The film’s influence has extended to other Black directors like Spike Lee, who placed it on his essential film list. The Library of Congress also weighed in on the movie’s importance, adding it to the National Film Registry. Tonight’s second film, Greased Lightning (1977), stars frequent Schultz collaborator Richard Pryor playing Wendell Scott, the first Black winner of a NASCAR race. The movie also stars Cleavon Little and Pam Grier.
