What Happened on the Final Episode of ‘Laverne & Shirley’?
What To Know
- The final episode of Laverne & Shirley, titled “Here Today, Hair Tomorrow,” focused on Carmine Ragusa’s attempt to pursue a Broadway career rather than providing closure for the main characters.
- Laverne helps Carmine achieve his dream by giving him her savings, while Shirley and other original cast members are notably absent from the finale.
- The episode served as a backdoor pilot for a Carmine spin-off that was never produced, leaving many fans dissatisfied with the series’ unresolved ending.
For longtime fans of Laverne & Shirley, the show’s final episode unfortunately didn’t really feel like proper closure. Titled “Here Today, Hair Tomorrow,” the episode aired on May 10, 1983, and closed out the series after eight seasons and 178 episodes. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Laverne & Shirley‘s premiere on January 27, 2026, let’s look back at the series send-off that didn’t give the show quite what it deserved.
What happened on the final episode of Laverne & Shirley?
By the end of the eighth season, the show had already changed dramatically from its Milwaukee roots, with the characters relocated to Los Angeles and Shirley Feeney no longer part of the regular cast following Cindy Williams‘ departure during the final season. Instead of centering on Laverne DeFazio, the finale unexpectedly shifted its spotlight to Carmine Ragusa and his next big gamble in hopes of creating a successful spin-off show.
The episode opens with Carmine in a state that alarms everyone around him. Frank DeFazio and Rhonda Lee notice that he has packed up his belongings, disconnected his phone, and turned off the gas, leading them to fear the worst briefly. The truth is that Carmine is frustrated by his lack of success in Hollywood and decides to leave Los Angeles altogether to try his luck in New York City. His new goal is to audition for a role in the Broadway musical Hair. However, money quickly becomes an obstacle.

Carmine does not have quite enough cash to make the trip, and both Frank and Rhonda chip in to help him get on the road. His most meaningful goodbye, though, comes when he visits Laverne. She admits she has finally saved enough money to buy herself a new bed, something she has clearly been looking forward to. Still, without much hesitation, she offers Carmine the last one hundred dollars he needs, choosing his dream over her own long-delayed comfort.
Once Carmine arrives in New York, the tone shifts toward a backstage musical fantasy. He heads into his audition for Hair, unsure whether he will finally catch a break or face another disappointment. Along the way, he meets Rick West, a fellow aspiring performer who becomes his new roommate and creative partner. The episode features several musical sequences inspired by Hair.

The Laverne & Shirley spinoff that never aired
Behind the scenes, “Here Today, Hair Tomorrow” was designed as a potential backdoor pilot for a Carmine-centered spin-off starring Eddie Mekka. ABC ultimately chose not to move forward with the concept. That explains why the story leaves Carmine on the brink of possibility rather than neatly tying up everything for the entire ensemble. Viewers never even get to see whether he lands the role.
For some fans, the most significant absence in the finale is Shirley herself. Williams had exited the series earlier in the season, so Shirley does not appear in the final episode or share a closing scene with Laverne. Lenny and Squiggy also take a back seat in the story. That creative choice has made the ending somewhat divisive over the years, especially for viewers who wanted one last full-circle moment with the original trio from the Milwaukee years.
