  • Featured films include iconic titles such as Beverly Hills Cop, the original Indiana Jones trilogy, The Terminator, Footloose, Lethal Weapon, Pretty in Pink, and Trading Places.

The ’80s are back … well, back on TV, anyway! This week, tons of classic ’80s favorites are airing across cable and over-the-air channels, all day long! So no matter whether you spent that decade taking the highway to the Danger Zone with Tom Cruise, or cutting Footloose with Kevin Bacon, you’ll find something you love on the air this week.

Staring this Monday, you can look forward to screenings of the Dan Aykroyd/ Eddie Murphy comedy Trading Places, all three original Indiana Jones films, Molly Ringwald’s coming-of-age classic Pretty in Pink, some of the era’s best buddy cop films, like Lethal Weapon and 48 HRS, and a number of films that had recent remakes, including the original Arnold Schwarzenegger Running Man, the original Karate Kid, and the original Naked Gun. Read on for the full totally radical schedule.

Beverly Hills Cop

airing at 8pm on AMC

BEVERLY HILLS COP, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Eddie Murphy, 1984

Despite its many sequels (including the 2024 Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), there’s nothing like the original tale of a Detroit cop out of his element in the ritzy Los Angeles enclave. Murphy had already been a star of standup and SNL (as well as the previous year’s comedy Trading Places), but this film, in which Axel Foley becomes a fish out of water while trying to solve his best friends murder, made Murphy an international superstar. See if you can watch without the film’s addictive synth theme getting stuck in your head!

Ordinary People

airing at 3:50pm on MGM

ORDINARY PEOPLE, Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, 1980.

Robert Redford started his directing career with a bang: his 1980 drama about a family torn apart by the death of their son took home the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Timothy Hutton, who played Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore’s depressed surviving son. Speaking of Moore — her role as the controlling family matriarch helped radically change her public image. She was winsome Mary Richard no more (or, no moore)!

The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

airing at 9pm on TMCX

THE NAKED GUN, Leslie Nielsen, 1988,

(c)Paramount/courtesy Everett Collection

Though the ’80s didn’t want for silly flicks (this is the decade that gave us Airplane!, after all), few hit as hard as the original Naked Gun. Leslie Nielsen — who, younger viewers will be surprised to learn, was previously more of a leading man type — left moviegoers in stitches as Det. Frank Drebin, a character he first played on the short-lived Police Squad! TV show. Come for the parodies of the era’s international espionage thrillers; stay for Nielsen’s team-up with Priscilla Presley for one of the silliest love scenes of all time.

Spaceballs

airing at 4:45pm on HBO

Spaceballs, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Mel Brooks, 1987,

MGM/Everett Collection

In the lead up to Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!, which premieres on HBO at 8pm tonight, the channel is airing several of the director’s classics, including this ultra-silly 1987 Star Wars parody. Brooks essentially plucked young Bill Pullman from obscurity to play Lone Starr, the Han Solo-esque figure who, with his sidekick Barf (John Candy), is charged with saving Princess Vespa (Melrose Place‘s Daphne Zuniga) from an evil scheme overseen by Rick Moranis’ Dark Helmet. Now’s a great time to refresh your memory before the long-awaited sequel comes out in 2027.

Caddyshack

airing at 7:45pm on IFC

CADDYSHACK, Bill Murray, 1980.

(c) Warner Bros./ Courtesy: Everett Collection.

So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice! This hit snobs vs. slobs comedy, which marked the directorial debut of Harold Ramis, was largely based on the real-life memories of Ramis, star Bill Murray and costar (and Bill’s brother) Brian Doyle-Murray, who had all caddied at gold clubs as teenagers. The film also marks the only time Murray and Chevy Chase — who often clashed off-screen during their time on SNL — shared a film screen.

MAJOR LEAGUE, Corbin Bernsen, Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, 1989

Everett Collection

A quest to create the worst professional baseball team of all time backfires hilariously in this 1989 hit, which starred Charlie Sheen as a talented but tough to control ex-con pitcher and Tom Berenger as an aging catcher looking to make good. Writer/ director David S. Ward once remarked that he created the film, which focuses on a fictionalized version of the Cleveland Indians, because “I figured I would never see the Indians win anything unless I wrote a movie where they did. That was the real genesis behind the movie.”

Pretty in Pink Andrew McCarthy, Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, 1986

Paramount/Everett Collection

John Hughes didn’t direct this film — instead, frequent Hughes collaborator Howard Deutsch made his directorial debut with this one — but it stands tall as one of Hughes’ greatest teen movies. Molly Ringwald turns in a career-defining performance as Andie, a teenage girl who is literally growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, and gets swept off her feet by Blane (Andrew McCarthy), a member of the school’s upper-class “richie” clique. Pop some popcorn, and try to decide if she should have actually ended up with Duckie (Jon Cryer), and if Blane is a name or a major appliance.
