Kiefer Sutherland was arrested after allegedly assaulting a ride-share driver in Los Angeles.
On Monday, January 12, just after midnight, the 24 actor was arrested on suspicion of felony criminal threats in the Hollywood area following the altercation, the Associated Press reported.
The Los Angeles Police Department said that Sutherland, 59, allegedly entered a ride-share vehicle and then physically assaulted the driver and “made criminal threats toward the victim,” per the AP. The driver did not require medical treatment, according to the LAPD.
Ultimately, Sutherland was released from jail a few hours after his arrest on a $50,000 bond. He has a court appearance set for February 2. As of writing, Sutherland has not publicly commented on the arrest.
This wasn’t his first run-in with the law. In 2007, Sutherland was sentenced to 48 days in jail after he pleaded no contest to a drunk driving charge, per CNN. He was also required to enroll in an 18-month alcohol education class and attend weekly alcohol therapy sessions for six months.
“I’m very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited recently,” Sutherland said in a statement at the time, per CBS News. “And I’m deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends, and co-workers on 24 and at 20th Century Fox.”
Additionally, he was convicted of drunk driving in 2004 and had several arrests in the ’90s related to alcohol.
In 2016, Sutherland discussed his drinking and the legal problems it has caused during an appearance on The Jess Cagle Interview, per People.
“I have, at times, for stretches of time [quit drinking],” Sutherland said. “But at some point, I’ve made a decision, right or wrong, for myself that I would rather work really hard so I could still have some of those times. Than to simply stop. That’s a choice I’ve made, and I live with that choice.”
Sutherland is best known for playing Jack Bauer on the Fox series 24, in addition to starring in TV shows like Designated Survivor, Touch, and Rabbit Hole. He is also known for his roles in the films Stand by Me (1986), The Lost Boys (1987), Young Guns (1988), and A Few Good Men (1991).
