If you grew up in the ’90s, you probably don’t need much of a refresher on who 4 Non Blondes are, but their name popping up on the lineup for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest might feel kind of random. The San Francisco-based band was very popular in the early ’90s, leaving behind one of the decade’s most instantly recognizable songs, “What’s Up?” And even if you didn’t grow up in the ’90s, you might recognize bits of the song from its recent run as part of a viral trend on social media. Now, they are gearing up for a comeback, performing this New Year’s Eve and preparing to release their first new album in over 30 years.
Who are 4 Non Blondes?
4 Non Blondes formed in 1989 and broke through with their 1992 debut album Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, which spent more than a year on the Billboard 200 and went platinum in the U.S. The band’s sound blended alternative rock with folk influences and raw, emotional lyrics. Frontwoman Linda Perry became the group’s unmistakable voice and while “What’s Up?” became the defining hit, tracks like “Spaceman” and “Dear Mr. President” helped cement the band’s identity.
Despite their success, the band split in 1994, just a couple of years after their album took off. Perry later spoke openly about her frustrations with the record and the pressures surrounding the band’s sudden fame. What followed, however, turned Perry into one of the most influential behind-the-scenes figures in pop music, writing and producing hits for artists like Christina Aguilera, Pink, Alicia Keys and Gwen Stefani.
