Best Classic Movies on TV This Week: December 15-21
What To Know
- This week’s TV schedule features a wide selection of classic movies, including holiday favorites like Holiday Inn, multiple versions of A Christmas Carol, and the annual broadcast of The Sound of Music.
- TCM highlights special programming such as a salute to angels on film and showcases musicals like 42nd Street, Footlight Parade, and The Unsinkable Molly Brown starring Debbie Reynolds.
- For viewers seeking variety, the lineup also includes non-holiday classics such as Wuthering Heights, The Wizard of Oz, and a mix of comedies, westerns, and family films airing throughout the week.
It’s so tough to keep on top of the thousands movies airing on cable TV and over-the-air antenna channels each week. But our day-by-day guide to classic movies on TV can help, with detailed listings of everything playing on primetime and beyond — so you never have to miss a favorite.
This week, there are plenty of Christmas classics, like Holiday Inn, multiple versions of A Christmas Carol, TCM’s salute to angels on film, a pop-up-fact-filled showing of Home Alone, and the always highly anticipated annual ABC showing of The Sound of Music.
And if you need a break from the holiday hustle and bustle, you can enjoy classic musicals like 42nd Street, Footlight Parade, and Gold Diggers of 1933, as well as the original cinematic adaptation of Wuthering Heights, filmed almost 100 years before the new 2026 version.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown
TCM, 9:15am

Everett Collection
TCM’s Unexpected Heroes block of films today includes a favorite with 1964’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown. This is one of those golden-age musicals that still feels alive with personality, thanks almost entirely to Debbie Reynolds. She’s a powerhouse as Molly — a rough-around-the-edges Colorado dreamer who claws her way from poverty to high society, and then famously refuses to go down with the Titanic. Reynolds gives her heart and grit, making Molly as funny as she is fearless. Opposite her, Harve Presnell’s Johnny Brown adds some warmth, grounding the film’s wilder moments. Presnell was the sole member of the original Broadway cast who reprised his stage role for the film. Sure, it’s big and brassy (Reynolds singing “Belly Up to the Bar, Boys”), but beneath the show tunes is a story about resilience and reinvention that still hits home today.

Room for One More

Chaos and sentimentality collide as Cary Grant and Betsy Drake take their real-life marriage to the silver screen in this 1952 film — but this is not your ordinary big-family film. The two stars play a husband and wife who, despite already having three children of their own, decide to become foster parents after Anna (Drake) visits an orphanage. And even with the challenges they incur, the delightfully moving message of finding a place to belong has helped the movie withstand the test of time.
Home Alone
Freeform, 5:50pm
“Keep the change, you filthy animal.” The 1990 Christmas comedy classic directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes is the tale of young Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), who is accidentally left behind at his Chicago home when his family jets off to Paris for the holidays. Kevin’s initially thrilled that his family is gone, but his house soon becomes the target of bumbling but determined burglars Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern). Meanwhile, Kevin’s mom (Catherine O’Hara) frantically tries to get back to Chicago. “Polka King of the Midwest” Gus Polinski (John Candy) to the rescue! Freeform presents the movie with its signature Pop’n Knowledge informative graphics.

250 Years of Jane Austen
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Yesterday, Dec. 16, marked the 250th anniversary of writer Jane Austen’s birth. Today, we celebrate the 18th century literary icon’s legacy with four films based on her best works. First is Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1996 take on Emma, a period rom-com in which her Emma Woodhouse plays matchmaker with hilarious results. Next is 1995’s critically acclaimed, star-studded Sense and Sensibility, with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman in lead roles. After that, see the same year’s missed-opportunity romance Persuasion, a more true-to-book film from England. And last but certainly not least is 1940’s Pride and Prejudice, notably starring Laurence Olivier as the reserved Mr. Darcy. Are you swooning yet?

TCM Spotlight: Divine Intervention
TCM, beginning at 8pm

20th Century Fox Film Corp./Courtesy: Everett Collection.
Film characters benefit (or suffer) from some “divine intervention” in these six films. The ’thon begins with the 1943 period comedy Heaven Can Wait (no relation to the 1978 Warren Beatty film of the same name) about a playboy (Don Ameche) who argues with Satan (Laird Cregar) that his ne’er-do-well life suggests he belongs down there instead of up in heaven. Gene Tierney costars. Then, Paul Muni is the dead gangster whose deal with the Devil (Claude Rains) backfires on Satan in 1946’s Angel on My Shoulder. Eddie “Rochester” Anderson got a rare starring role in 1943’s Cabin in the Sky, an all-Black-cast musical about a resurrected gambler given one last chance to make good (as an angel and the Devil try to influence him). The night is rounded out with The Story of Mankind (1957), The Green Pastures (1936) and Heavenly Music (1943).

Some of Hollywood’s best-loved religious films fill the screen on this day in the run-up to the holidays. First, Loretta Young and Celeste Holm are French nuns who help build a New England children’s hospital in the 1949 dramedy Come to the Stable. That’s followed by familiar epic fare: John Huston directs, narrates and leads an all-star cast, playing Noah in 1966’s The Bible: In the Beginning; Robert Powell plays the title role and costars with Olivia Hussey and Anne Bancroft in Part I of 1977’s Jesus of Nazareth, followed by Part II; then, Richard Burton and Jean Simmons costar in 1953’s The Robe, inspired by the story of Christ, followed by a sequel, the 1954 drama Demetrius and the Gladiators, starring Victor Mature and Susan Hayward.

Marilyn Monroe Icon-a-Thon
MOVIES!, beginning at 3:20pm

Baron/Hulton Archive/Getty Images
Enjoy five movies featuring the incomparable Marilyn Monroe. The Icon-a-Thon begins with O. Henry’s Full House (1952), a film anthology of five stories from author O. Henry. Monroe plays an early 20th century streetwalker in the first story, “The Cop and the Anthem.” Then, enjoy Monroe in several comedy and musical films that catapulted her to superstardom. She stars with Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable in 1953’s How to Marry a Millionaire, playing a sometimes-glasses-wearing gold digger. The next films feature some of Monroe’s most memorable musical performances, including “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in Gentleman Prefer Blondes (1953), costarring Jane Russell; “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” in Let’s Make Love (1960), a film also featuring French actor Yves Montand, with whom Monroe had an affair during filming; and “Heat Wave” in 1954’s There’s No Business Like Show Business.

Ma and Pa Kettle at Home
FETV, 3pm

Everett Collection
This is the seventh movie in the 10-film comedy franchise that was first introduced in 1947’s The Egg and I. Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbridge starred as Ma and Pa Kettle, a country couple with contrasting personalities (she works hard, he likes to win contests) raising 15 boisterous children in rural Washington. In this 1954 release, their son Elwin enters a contest with an essay that describes the family farm as much more modern and efficient than it really is. Ma and Pa try to keep up appearances when the judges come to visit.
The Sound of Music
ABC, 7pm
Based on the great 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical of the same name, this big-screen adaptation of The Sound of Music celebrates its 60th anniversary. One of the finest movie musical dramas ever produced, the hugely entertaining and practically flawless film won five of the 10 Oscars for which it was nominated, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise). It’s filled with a nonstop string of iconic and hummable tunes like “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “The Lonely Goatherd” and “The Sound of Music,” and these songs are all big parts of why audiences made the movie a blockbuster that was, for a few years, the highest-grossing film of all time.
The other big reasons The Sound of Music succeeds so effectively are the engaging performances from its terrific cast members, led by Best Actress Oscar nominee Julie Andrews, who plays Maria von Trapp in a story based on von Trapp’s memoir. In the late 1930s, Maria, a young novitiate, is sent by her convent to Austria to become a governess to the seven children of widowed naval officer Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer in the role that made him a film star). Maria brings love and music into the lives of the von Trapp family, even as the rise of Nazism in neighboring Germany begins to cast an ominous shadow.
