Dick Van Dyke recently revealed how he once “pissed” off his The Dick Van Dyke Show costar, Mary Tyler Moore.
On November 30, the actor, 99, spoke at Vandy High Tea, which he hosted at his Malibu, California, residence. Van Dyke — who turns 100 on December 13 — recalled a time when Moore was less than thrilled after he drew a caricature of her.
“I made her mouth too big, and she was so pissed at me,” he said at the charity event, per People. He continued, “I had to go back and draw it again. I mean, she had a beautiful mouth, but it was generous.”
Van Dyke’s wife, Arlene Silver, 54, said of Tyler Moore, “She turned the world on with her smile.”
The Dick Van Dyke Show aired for five seasons from 1961 to 1996. In the sitcom, Tyler Moore and Van Dyke played the iconic married couple, Laura and Rob Petrie.
“We became like an improv,” Van Dyke said of their in-sync dynamic during a 2016 interview with Entertainment Tonight. “You could just tell us a scene, and we could make it up. She read me very well, and I read her timing very well, and it was just such a pleasure to work with her.”
He also admitted, “I had a real crush on her.”
However, Van Dyke explained that he initially thought Tyler Moore was too young to play his wife on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
“I said, ‘She’s a little young, isn’t she?’ 12 years,” he recalled, to which the show’s creator, Carl Reiner, added, “I said, ‘Nobody’s going to know.'”
Reiner pointed out, “Nobody ever even mentioned it. The first time they kissed on the pilot, that was it. They were together.”
In 2017, Moore died at 80 from cardiopulmonary arrest after she was placed on a ventilator the prior week.
The Dick Van Dyke Show, streaming on Prime Video, The Roku Channel, Tubi, Pluto TV, Sling TV, Phio, Plex, and more.
