What To Know

  • A sequel to the 2005 film The Family Stone is in development after Diane Keaton’s death.
  • Bezucha emphasized the importance of reuniting the original cast.
  • The original film, now considered a Christmas classic, continues to attract viewers annually.

The Family Stone has a sequel in the works after Diane Keaton‘s death.

In an interview with CNN published on November 19, writer-director Thomas Bezucha opened up about his mission to revisit the Stone family 20 years after the 2005 film premiered. Keaton played matriarch Sybil Stone in the romantic-comedy drama that follows a chaotic family at Christmastime. At the end of the movie, Sybil dies from breast cancer after revealing her terminal illness.

Bezucha said he wanted to honor Keaton “even more now” in the wake of her shocking death at 79 on October 11.

“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” he told CNN. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”

In addition to Keaton, The Family Stone starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Elizabeth Reaser, and Craig T. Nelson. The plot follows a seriously awkward holiday visit that ends with two of the siblings falling in love with the other’s partner.

A Family Stone sequel has been in the works for a while now, but Bezucha said his producer was only on board if the main cast was interested. “I’m not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan,” he said.

The good news is that everyone seemed interested. However, no one has officially signed on, and the sequel has not officially been greenlit. Bezucha said he is focused on finishing the final version of the script.

Earlier this month, Mulroney spoke about how The Family Stone remains a Christmas classic two decades later.

“It came as a surprise that it became a perennial, annual must-watch,” he told The New York Post. “Two Christmases ago, the [Wall Street Journal] did a lengthy article about why people were drawn to such a wrenching movie, and watched it every year to make themselves cry.”
