Madylin Sweeten was only five years old when she got the role of Ally Barone on the sitcom; now, she is 34 years old and a new mom herself. She has also maintained her acting career in small guest roles, while exploring new creative pursuits like designing home furnishings.

How did Madylin Sweetin start acting?

Sweeten grew up in a big family in Texas and found a love of performing from an early age, training at a local performing arts school before landing her first role in the TV movie A Promise to Carolyn. Not long after, she got her big break in Everybody Loves Raymond. She grew up on the sitcom, spending nine years playing Ally before the series ended in 2005.

After the finale, Sweeten took a break from acting and allowed herself a more normal life out of the spotlight. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, she returned to acting in minor roles, including in Eagle Eye and Spare Change. She even appeared in episodes of popular series Grey’s Anatomy and Lucifer and joined the sketch comedy group TMI Hollywood.

As she got older, she discovered a love for the creative process and began producing and sometimes co-writing short films, eventually joining Loft Ensemble. She also works with a Los Angeles furniture shop, The Joneses LA, creating stylish home furnishings.

Sweeten married actor Sean Durrie in 2018 after several years together, and the two welcomed their first child, a son, in April 2025. While she has experienced a lot of joy in her personal life, she has also known great loss. Her younger brother, Sawyer, who played Geoffrey on Everybody Loves Raymond, passed away in 2015 at only 19. Sweeten has spoken openly about how much she loved him and how much she misses him. Her brother Sullivan, Sawyer’s twin, was also on the show.

In the months leading up to the reunion, Sweeten has shared sweet behind-the-scenes glimpses, including a photo of herself back on that famous couch and a moment when she brought her baby to the set to meet her former costars.
