The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson issued a rare political message during a recent interview.
On the November 14 episode of Brittany Broski‘s The Royal Court, the actor behind Peeta Mellark gave a brutally honest answer. Broksi asked him about Peeta’s “hijacking” in the Hunger Games series when he suddenly got political.
“In Mockingjay Part 1, Peeta is brainwashed by the Capitol. What is something that would indicate to your friends that you had been hijacked?” she asked. “What’s something you would never say?”
After a beat, Hutcherson responded, “I’m a Republican?” prompting Broski and her team to burst out laughing.
“Or, like, anything that reads into that,” he added. “If that happened, they would be like, ‘No, he’s not him.’”
In the comments of the YouTube video, fans weighed in on the unexpected political declaration. One person wrote, “‘I’m a Republican’ as something he’d never say. Why does it actually feel so refreshing hearing such a clear statement from a celebrity! What a man.”
On X, many others reacted to Hutcherson’s comment. One critic shared, “Brainwashed response in itself and includes projection. And yes, there are plenty of people on the right brainwashed, too. Celebrities need to stop speaking unless they are repeating the lines from the script. Oh ya, they are!”
A second X user agreed, writing, “Ironically, this actually shows how brainwashed he is.”
However, one fan commented, “Josh handled that question with real confidence. He knows exactly who he is and what he stands for, and he is not afraid to say it out loud. Moments like this make celebrities feel more real and relatable to everyone watching.”
Yet another X user pointed out, “Gonna be some awkward family reunions in Kentucky for ole Josh.”
The Five Nights at Freddy’s actor’s political party shouldn’t come as a total shock to fans, considering the actor endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in 2020.
“When I was on the campaign trail in 2016, time after time I saw Bernie inspire hope in everyone he met,” Hutcherson said in a press release. “He’s the leading candidate on climate change and getting money out of D.C.. Not only will he be the candidate to beat Donald Trump, but he will be the leader we need to meet the challenges we face as a nation and as a global society. It scares me to think about what the future may be like if we don’t start making big changes, and Bernie is the person I want to build the platform upon which we can all rise.”
