Minka Kelly’s life wasn’t always easy. She was born in Los Angeles and raised primarily by her mother, Maureen Kelly, amid many financial struggles. At one point, the two lived in a storage shed, and when Kelly’s mother was later jailed on drug charges, Kelly stayed with friends and acquaintances. She eventually graduated from Valley High School in Albuquerque before reconnecting with her father, former Aerosmith guitarist Rick Dufay, and moving back to California.

Kelly then trained as a surgical technician and worked in the operating room for several years while auditioning on the side. She booked early appearances on shows like What I Like About You, Entourage and American Dreams before landing the role that changed everything.

In 2006, she was cast as Lyla Garrity on Friday Night Lights, and critics praised her portrayal of the Dillon High cheerleader with a complicated home life. It became her breakout role, leading to roles in 500 Days of Summer, The Roommate, and a stint on Parenthood. In 2013, she portrayed First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in Lee Daniels‘ film The Butler, alongside Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey.

Kelly continued working in television throughout the 2010s, including starring in the 2011 reboot of Charlie’s Angels. Later, she found a new fan base in the DC Universe series Titans, playing Dawn Granger, also known as Dove, from 2018 to 2021. Around the same time, she also voiced the character North in the video game Detroit: Become Human, and in 2022, she appeared in season two of Euphoria as Samantha, a wealthy young mother.

Kelly is also an author. Her 2023 memoir, Tell Me Everything, became a New York Times bestseller and earned praise from outlets such as Elle and The Washington Post. In the book, she reflects on her turbulent childhood, her relationship with her mother and the long path she took toward acting and adulthood.

She went on to film the thriller Blackwater Lane, released in 2024, and began work on the Netflix drama series Ransom Canyon, where she plays a concert pianist. Kelly learned the piano parts by memory after training with a teacher in Albuquerque, and she has spoken about her boyfriend, Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons, helping her practice.

In a 2025 interview with Jenna Bush Hager and Andy Cohen on the Today Show, Kelly revealed that prior to landing her role in Ransom Canyon, she believed her career was over: “I thought that many times,” she said, revealing that “if any amount of time passes [between jobs, she thinks] ‘Okay, this is it, I had a good run…I have my back-up, I can be a scrub tech again.”

Her personal life in recent years has been more community-focused. Kelly has long worked with ABLE, a company that creates sustainable jobs for vulnerable women in Ethiopia and other regions. She has helped design accessories and jewelry through their partnership and has been vocal about supporting women who are rebuilding their lives. She has also participated in USO tours, breast cancer awareness campaigns and charity events connected to causes close to her heart.
