Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale announced his retirement in a heartfelt message to fans.

On November 13, the rock icon, 74, published a YouTube video revealing his decision to step back from the spotlight after more than five decades.

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, brothers and sisters of the Snake, a special announcement for you,” Coverdale began. “After 50 years-plus of incredible journey with you — with Deep Purple, with Whitesnake and Jimmy Page — the last few years have been very evident to me that it’s time, really, to hang up my rock and roll platform shoes and my skin-tight jeans.”

The “Here I Go Again” singer continued, “It’s time for me to call it a day. I love you dearly. I thank everyone who’s assisted and supported me on this incredible journey, all the musicians, the crew, the fans, the family. It’s amazing. But it really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement.”

Coverdale was a lead singer for Deep Purple from 1973 to 1976; he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 as a member of the group. In 1978, Coverdale formed Whitesnake with the initial band members, guitarists Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody, bassist Neil Murray, and drummer David Dowle. He later formed the rock duo Coverdale/Page in 1991 and released a self-titled album in 1993.

To end his message, Coverdale raised a glass and declared, “Fare thee well,” a hat tip to Whitesnake’s 2011 song. A montage of photos to “Fare Thee Well” played for the remaining five minutes.

In the comments, Whitesnake fans shared their reactions to Coverdale’s retirement news. One YouTube user wrote, “Can we get a virtual round of applause for Mr David Coverdale!? U rock, man, enjoy retirement!! It’s VERY well earned and u deserve the best!!! 👏👏 .”

Another shared, “Dignity and class are right here. Have a fun and relaxing retirement. You gave it all, and we thank you for that!”

Someone else echoed, “Whitesnake was a big part of my youth in the ’80s. Thanks for all the memories.”

A different follower admitted, “I am crying. Thank you, David, for being a part of my life since 1987.”

Meanwhile, yet another YouTube user commented, “Well deserved retirement. You’ve made music that has been part of the soundtrack of our lives. Thank you! 🤘.”
