How Well Do You Remember These Classic 1950s TV Westerns?
Everett Collection
Though the 1950s are often remembered as the era of the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, or the era when teens first reigned supreme in popular culture, the decade was also the peak of the TV Western. The first Western series, Hopalong Cassidy, hit the small screen in 1949; by 1959, 30 Western series were in primetime.
And the shows were more than just popular — they jumpstarted the careers of stars from Steve McQueen to Clint Eastwood, and series like Gunsmoke and Death Valley Days became television institutions, staying on the air for decades.
