For some, Mary Poppins is not just a Disney classic, but a perfect rewatch during the holidays — and those fans will be happy to know that the film is heading back to network TV this holiday season. This year, Mary Poppins will air on Thursday, November 27, from 8:00 to 11:00pm ET on ABC, as part of its annual The Wonderful World of Disney lineup.

The film has an impressive legacy. Released in 1964, it became one of Disney’s most celebrated productions, earning thirteen Academy Award nominations and winning five. Julie Andrews won Best Actress for her performance, which remains one of the most beloved portrayals in movie musical history. Dick Van Dyke, despite years of jokes about his accent, also shines as Bert in the film.

The mix of live action and animation was groundbreaking at the time, creating a visual style that feels instantly recognizable even today. Songs like “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and “Feed the Birds” became a part of popular culture, and many families can still recite them word for word.

Over the years, Mary Poppins has also inspired several related projects, each one reflecting the film’s long lasting impact. The most direct continuation was Mary Poppins Returns, the 2018 sequel starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, which introduced a new generation to the Banks family while honoring the spirit of the original, featuring a very special cameo by Van Dyke.

The legacy of the original also inspired Saving Mr. Banks in 2013, a dramatized look at the making of Mary Poppins and the complicated relationship between Walt Disney and author P. L. Travers. Beyond film, the story found new life on stage in the mid-2000s when Mary Poppins was adapted into a major theatrical production in London and later on Broadway.

For anyone who prefers streaming or wants to watch earlier in the day, the original film is also available on Disney+.
