MOVIES!, 8pm

CLEOPATRA, German lobbycard, from left: Rex Harrison, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, 1963,

20th Century-Fox Film Corporation/courtesy Everett Collection

There may not be another movie as epic as this 1963 historical saga starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The sprawling love story between Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt (Taylor) and Caesar’s right-hand man, Mark Antony (Burton), as directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, is one for the ages — and has stood the test of time, cementing its place in film history thanks to its vibrant performances and lengthy story. In addition to being the highest-grossing film of the year, it received nine Academy Award nominations (including one for Best Picture), winning four.

Star of the Month: Rock Hudson

TCM, beginning at 8pm

MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, Rock Hudson, Jane Wyman, 1954

Everett Collection

Legendary actor Rock Hudson was born in Illinois on Nov. 17, 1925. Yesterday would have been the star’s 100th birthday (he passed away in 1985 from complications related to AIDS at age 59). Turner Classic Movies continues its monthlong celebration of the star with several more of his films, starting with 1954’s Magnificent Obsession, which turned him into a genuine movie star. Hudson plays a reckless, drinking playboy who alienates everyone around him. After inadvertently causing a woman (Jane Wyman) to go blind, he dedicates the rest of his life to medicine and becoming a brain surgeon. Will he later need those skills to save her, who he has secretly fallen in love with? This sophisticated soap opera was one of the eight films Hudson made with director Douglas Sirk. The second film in tonight’s lineup, the melodrama All That Heaven Allows, costars Wyman in another successful collaboration.

TCM, beginning at 8pm

THE LATE SHOW, from left: Art Carney, Lily Tomlin, 1977

Everett Collection

“There are two kinds of people in his uptight world: his victims and his women. And sometimes you can’t tell them apart.” So reads the ad for 1967’s dark drama Point Blank, which host Eddie Muller (Noir Alley) points out is “all Lee Marvin,” at the height of his post-Dirty Dozen fame. Marvin plays Walker, a double-crossed criminal bent on revenge, who just wants his cut — $93,000 — that was swindled from him. Angie Dickinson costars. Then it’s Robert Benton’s quirky comic mystery, 1977’s The Late Show, with Art Carney trying to solve his ex-partner’s murder and Lily Tomlin along for the ride. And Mick Jagger plays (what else?) a rock star hiding a killer (James Fox) in the 1970 cult fave Performance.

TCM, beginning at 8pm

CACTUS FLOWER, Goldie Hawn, Walter Matthau, 1969

Everett Collection

Go, Goldie, go! The starlet turns 80 years old today, and the classic movie net is celebrating her biggest hits. The five-flick celebration starts by showing off her range in the 1969 screwball comedy Cactus Flower, in which Hawn plays Toni Simmons, an anxious woman who falls for Walter Matthau’s dentist Dr. Julian Winston. The role earned her an Academy Award. Next, Hawn is whimsical girl next door/actress Jill Tanner in 1972’s Butterflies Are Free. Then the 1978 neo-noir thriller Foul Play sees Hawn as librarian Gloria Mundy opposite Chevy Chase’s PI. And in the wee hours, stay up to blow out the candles on 1984’s Swing Shift and 1982’s Best Friends.

Two for One: Nathan Lane

TCM, beginning at 8pm

CHINATOWN, Jack Nicholson, 1974

In tonight’s Two for One re-airing, TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by actor Nathan Lane, who introduces two films of his choosing. Lane will offer commentary on each title’s cultural significance and its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories, and his own personal reflections on them. Lane (The Producers) chooses two of his — and our — favorite noirs to highlight. First in the spotlight: 1944’s Double Indemnity, in which insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) is pulled into the ultimate murder plot, as manipulative femme fatale Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) plans to kill her husband (Tom Powers) and file a claim for accidental death. The second film is 1974’s iconic Chinatown. Set in 1937, the film follows L.A. detective J.J. Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), who is hired to investigate what he believes is an affair. But Jake soon realizes he was hired by a fake, and something even more sinister is brewing in the city.

MeTV, 8pm

There are a million ways to die out West — but none of the settlers who rode those wagon trains through the mountains anticipated getting taken out by a vampire. However, that’s exactly what is happening to the buxom young ladies of an Old West town in this film, which supposedly started off as a joke screenplay idea spun up by husband-and-wife writing team Edward and Mildred Dein.

Original Film: Toni Braxton’s He Wasn’t Man Enough

Lifetime, 8pm

Lifetime takes another one of recording artist Toni Braxton’s hit songs as inspiration for its latest original. Here, Melody “Mel” Montgomery, a bestselling author, returns to Atlanta with her boyfriend Richard, believing in their future together. But when she discovers he’s been lying and using her money to fund his failing tech startup, Mel ends the relationship and begins rebuilding her life. With the support of her best friend Candy and a surprising reunion with estranged college friend Monica, Mel rediscovers her strength. Stars Toni Braxton, Essence Atkins and Yvette Nicole Brown.

Joan Crawford Double Feature

TCM, beginning at 8pm

QUEEN BEE, from left: Joan Crawford, Barry Sullivan, Joan Crawford (top), John Ireland, 1955

Everett Collection

There are few actresses who can claim excellence like the glamorous Joan Crawford, once dubbed “Queen of the Movies,” and tonight’s double feature just solidifies her reign. Fittingly, the first film showcased is 1955’s Southern Gothic drama Queen Bee, where Crawford is endlessly entertaining as the cunning villain Eva Phillips, whose wretchedness affects everyone around her. After, catch 1956’s Autumn Leaves, a psychological thriller in which Crawford, as typist Milly Wetherby, falls for an unstable younger war veteran (played by Cliff Robertson) in a May-December romance. Whatever she does, we simply can’t look away. And why would you?

movie poster for the 1981 movie "The Cannonball Run." It is an illustration of several of the film's stars drawn in a caricature-like manner gathered around a "Speed Limit 55" sign that has a red sports car bursting through it. Gathered around the sign, clockwise from bottom left, are characters played by Adrienne Barbeau, Dean Martin, Farrah Fawcett, Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Dom Deluise, Sammy Davis Jr. and Jamie Farr. These actors' names, as well as those of costars Terry Bradshaw and Mel Tillis, are listed at the top of the poster. To the left of the illustration is a tagline: "You'll root for them all ... but you'll never guess who wins." Just below that is the title "The Cannonball Run" in stylized red lettering.
