Gilmore Girls star Jared Padalecki and Alexis Bledel actually fell asleep in a scene as Rory Gilmore and Dean Forester in a Season 1 episode.
During a November 6 interview with People alongside Gilmore Girls costar Matt Czuchry — who played Rory’s boyfriend in college, Logan Huntzberger — Padalecki recalled the sweet story behind a Season 1, Episode 9 scene.
In “Rory’s Dance,” Dean and Rory walked around Stars Hollow after attending her school dance at Chilton. They stopped at Miss Patty’s (Liz Torres) dance studio, where they ended up falling asleep together on bean bag chairs. The thing is, the actors also fell asleep while shooting the scene.
“It was one of those long-a** days, like 18/20 hours, whatever,” Padalecki recalled. “We were so tired … So we kind of like, lay down on the bean bag, just like, so they can set up the lights and make sure there’s no gear in the frame.”
He continued, “So the scene where Dean and Rory are sleeping on a bean bag at Miss Patty’s, Jared and Alexis are sleeping. Like when they said, ‘OK, we’re good.’ They were telling us we were wrapped. We’re like, ‘OK, we’ll pretend to sleep.’ Like, ‘No, no, y’all were sleeping. We got it. Go.’ It was wild. There were a few nights like that.”
In a 2021 interview with Glamour, Padalecki shared another way life imitated art: He and Bledel dated while filming Season 1.
“When Alexis and I met, we were both 17 years old and were both Texans and kind of in this new, strange city, and I was like, ‘Hey, want to go out to dinner?’” he told the publication.
Padalecki also said that Bledel later dated Milo Ventimiglia, who played her on-screen love interest, Jess Mariano.
Gilmore Girls aired for seven seasons from 2000 to 2007. In addition to Bledel, Padalecki, Czuchry, and Ventimiglia, it starred Lauren Graham as Lorelai, Scott Patterson as Luke, Chad Michael Murray as Tristan, Kelly Bishop as Emily, Melissa McCarthy as Sookie, Keiko Agena as Lane, Edward Herrmann as Richard, and Sean Gunn as Kirk, among others.
