Hilary Duff recently opened up about why she never offered to mentor her fellow Disney Channel stars, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.
In 2001, Duff, now 38, became a household name thanks to Lizzie McGuire, which aired for two seasons and ended in 2004. The Disney series also inspired a TV film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003). (Plus, Duff also starred in the 2004 film A Cinderella Story.)
Gomez, 33, burst onto the Disney Channel scene in 2007 as Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place. The show aired for four seasons, ending in 2012 — also sparking several movies and a 2024 revival series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
Meanwhile, Lovato, also 33, rose to fame in 2009 on Sonny With a Chance, which aired for two seasons until 2011, as well as through Camp Rock (2008) alongside the Jonas brothers.
During an appearance on the November 5 episode of the Therapuss With Jake Shane podcast, Duff dished on her relationships with Gomez and Lovato during the height of their Disney Channel fame.
When host Jake Shane asked, “Did Selena or Miley [Cyrus] or anyone in that generation ever come to you and be like, ‘What was this like for you?’ Like, did you ever mentor any of them, or was it just separated?”
“I can’t remember exactly, but I know at some point, Selena and Demi both approached me at certain things, like years and years and years ago,” Duff recalled. “Then they were really lovely, and really sweet and kind, and telling me how much they love me and that kind of conversation.”
She continued, “But I was never like, ‘Let me show you the way.’ Which, thank goodness, because it’s been so fun to watch all of them pave their way and watch the journey. It’s been insane. What a ride for all of the Disney people.”
Recently, Duff announced her return to music, releasing her first single in over a decade, titled “Mature,” on November 6. Lizzie McGuire fans unsurprisingly went wild over the news.
