Will & Grace star Debra Messing‘s bold political message about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani — who ended up winning his race — elicited backlash on Election Day.
On Tuesday, November 4, the actress who played Grace Adler in the beloved sitcom took to her Instagram Stories with a series of politically-charged takes. One update in particular caught fans’ attention: Messing shared an Islamophobic post from The Persian Jewess on her IG Stories, Entertainment Weekly reported.
The post featured a photo of an edited ballot with two candidates, with one reading, “A Democrat. Just a Democrat,” and the other reading, “An actual communist jihadist. A literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist.” In the original post, the caption declared, “This isn’t just a mayoral race. It’s the battle for Democracy itself. New York City, make the right choice. Vote for [Andrew] Cuomo. Vote for NYC. Vote for Democracy.”
Ultimately, Mamdani — a Democrat who is Muslim and will be the youngest-ever NYC mayor at 34 — won the race over third-party candidate Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

On X, many called attention to Messing’s political re-post that took aim at Mamdani’s religion. One user pointed out, “Debra Messing has posted 91 Instagram stories in the past 24 hours. Not an exaggeration. I think Zohran has actually broken her brain.”
Another X user shared, “It’s funny how Debra Messing, one of Hillary Clinton‘s biggest supporters, is now just straight up promoting Donald Trump‘s endorsement of Andrew Cuomo because she’s just that Islamophobic and anti-Zohran Mamdani. She’s sharing Breitbart, CPAC, & Newsmax posts!”
Someone else wrote via X, “I didn’t realize Debra Messing has a deep hatred for Zohran Mamdani lmao. She is even sharing Trump’s rants! Simply unhinged.”
Will & Grace aired for 11 seasons, split into two parts. The original run aired from 1998 to 2006, with a revival run from 2017 to 2020. In addition to Messing, the sitcom starred Eric McCormack as her gay best friend, Will Truman, as well as Megan Mullally as Karen Walker and Sean Hayes as Jack McFarland.
