If you’re tired of finding out that your favorite movie is on TV an hour after it started, we’re here to help. Our guide to classic movies on TV this week will give you a quick overview of what’s playing every day, on broadcast networks and cable channels, during primetime and beyond.

As we enter the week leading up to Halloween, there are plenty of frightful delights on the schedule, including two TCM spooky movie marathons, a Halloween marathon on AMC, and screenings of everything from Bride of Frankenstein to The Sixth Sense and American Psycho.

But if ghosts and gore are simply not your scene, don’t worry — you have alternatives in primetime every night, including Twister, Armageddon, Shampoo, Heat, Notting Hill, Speed, The Shawshank Redemption, The Breakfast Club and a Planet of the Apes marathon. And this weekend, you can relax with everything from Lord of the Rings to two Katharine Hepburn films selected by Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates.

Gothic Horror movies on TCM

TCM, beginning at 7am

Today, enjoy an all-day celebration of Gothic horror with a lineup of some of the most classic, beloved films of the genre. First is the silent adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel starring Lon Chaney, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), followed by the 2000 documentary about Chaney’s career, Lon Chaney: A Thousand Faces. Then comes more Lon Chaney in the 1925 silent film adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s oft-adapted novel, The Phantom of the Opera (1925). Following that is another adaptation, this time of the 1886 Gothic novella by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson: the Oscar-nominated horror film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941), starring Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner. Then, to close out the day, four lesser-known horror dramas: Isle of the Dead (1945), Bedlam (1946), Mark of the Vampire (1935) and House of Dark Shadows (1970).

A series of murders across the Las Vegas Strip and a murderer who leaves his victims drained of blood is the setup for this 1972 made-for-television vampire film featuring Darren McGavin as Carl Kolchak — a character who would recur in the sequel, The Night Strangler, airing immediately afterward, as well as the 1974-75 television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. The Night Stalker was the highest-rated made-for-TV film of its time and continues to remain a cult classic for horror fans.

Halloween comes early on TCM, with an all-day Halloween-themed marathon that begins in the morning and continues all day as well as tomorrow. The extensive lineup for Halloween Eve includes the following spooky films: Two on a Guillotine (1965), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), Spider Baby (1967), Freaks (1932), Horror of Dracula (1958), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Leopard Man (1943), I Walked With a Zombie (1943), Cat People (1942), Nightmare (1964), Curse of the Demon (1958), Burn, Witch, Burn (1962), The Seventh Victim (1943), The Woman in White (1948) and The Hunger (1983).

Celebrate the season with a chilling Halloween marathon featuring the iconic films that made Michael Myers a legend of horror, with Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween (2007), Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers. The marathon begins with Halloween III, as that film had a completely different narrative. John Carpenter and producing partner Debra Hill branched out, putting the previous story to rest and going with an Invasion of the Body Snatchers-like tale involving a plan to kill the children of the world via fragments of Stonehenge placed in Halloween masks. The masks turned their wearer into a mush of snakes and bugs, leading to one of the franchise’s most memorable kills. Poor box office/critical reception for Halloween III led to The Shape’s return in the next film, plus the introduction of a fan-favorite character.

Two for One: Kathy Bates

TCM, beginning at 8pm

BRINGING UP BABY, US poster, Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, 1938

Everett Collection

In tonight’s re-airing of the Ben Mankiewicz-hosted series, Oscar winner Kathy Bates shares her chosen double feature for the night. The actress, known for her winning performance in Stephen King’s Misery and her latest run on the CBS drama Matlock, takes viewers back to the Dirty ’30s. First up: 1938’s romantic comedy Bringing Up Baby, where Katharine Hepburn as a stuck-up heiress and Cary Grant as a serious scientist engage in their classic banter. After, stick around for 1937’s Stage Door, in which Hepburn shines as Terry, a highbrow aspiring actress at a theatrical boarding house where she clashes with her sarcastic dancer roommate Jean (Ginger Rogers). “We started off on the wrong foot,” says Jean. “Let’s stay that way.”

Editor’s Pick: Gilda

MOVIES!, 8pm

GILDA, Glenn Ford, Rita Hayworth, 1946

Everett Collection

Iconic images and characters define noir more than most other movie genres: the hardboiled detective, the dark alleys and streets, corrupt cops, the femme fatale. “Femme fatale” might as well just have Rita Hayworth’s picture next to it in the dictionary. Her turn in Gilda (1946) shines, along with her costumes and dance numbers, as a casino owner’s moll who gets romantically mixed up with Glenn Ford’s gambler who’s been tasked with keeping an eye on the singer. In a now-famous quote, Hayworth described how her sexy movie character affected her real life after the popular movie: “Men go to bed with Gilda but wake up with me.”
