When it popped onto our TV screens in 2004, it was immediately obvious that Deadwood was no ordinary Western. A gritty, profane and erudite series created by David Milch, Deadwood followed an ensemble cast that included Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane and Keith Carradine, as well as John Hawkes, Powers Boothe, William Sanderson, Jeffrey Jones, Brad Dourif and W. Earl Brown in supporting roles, as they went about their lives in the lawless South Dakota gold-mining town in 1876, just weeks after Custer’s massacre at nearby Little Big Horn.

Though it only lasted 3 seasons, it’s hard to forget the show’s evocative depictions of real Wild West characters, like McShane’s black-hearted brothel and saloon owner Al Swearengen, and Olyphant’s depiction of lawman-turned-businessman Seth Bullock. The show won eight Emmys, and is generally considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time — so much so that over a decade after the 2006 series finale, HBO released Deadwood: The Movie on May 31, 2019.
