Actress, author, and icon Carrie Fisher would have been 69 years old on October 21, 2025, had she lived to celebrate. Remembered for her sharp wit, fearless honesty, and unforgettable turn as Princess Leia in Star Wars, Fisher remains one of Hollywood’s most beloved figures. She passed away on December 27, 2016, at 60, leaving behind a legacy that inspires generations of fans.
Fisher’s performance as Princess Leia Organa cemented her as both a pop culture legend and a symbol of strength for generations of fans. She was also celebrated for her sharp wit, acclaimed writing, and unflinching honesty about mental health and addiction, as seen in her bestselling memoir Wishful Drinking.
Her daughter, actress and Hollywood royalty, Billie Lourd, followed in her footsteps as an actress, making her mark in television and film with standout roles in American Horror Story, Scream Queens, and the Star Wars sequel trilogy, where she appeared alongside her mother as Lieutenant Connix.

On Fisher’s birthday, Lourd posted a tribute to her late mother on Instagram in a bevy of photos that included both Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds.
In two lengthy posts on Instagram, Lourd wrote: “My mom would’ve been 69 years old today. Which still feels shockingly young because this is the 9th birthday of hers I’ve “celebrated” without her. It feels like she has been dead so long that she should be 100 at this point? It feels more okay for a 100-year-old person to be dead? But not a 69-year-old.”

“Every time I meet someone older than her I’m secretly jealous. Why couldn’t she have lived as long as they have? Anyone out there who has lost a loved one too young can maybe relate? So I can’t really call it a wholly happy birthday ’cause she isn’t here to enjoy the happy,” said the American Horror Story actress. “She never got to meet her grandchildren and see them grow into the magical, smart, hilarious kind creatures they are today.”
In the post, Lourd makes reference who how her mother died. The official cause of death was listed as sleep apnea and other undetermined factors. A coroner’s report later noted that she had multiple substances in her system — including traces of cocaine, heroin, and MDMA — though it wasn’t clear if they directly contributed to her death.
“The other night, my son asked me how she died – I told him that she didn’t take care of her body, telling him the truth without telling him the whole truth. ‘Oh, but I take care of my body!’ Yes I replied, ‘Yes, you do! And I do too, and daddy does too!’ Death isn’t looming at our doorsteps the way it always was for her. That’s a conversation for later years.”

Lourd then opened up about how she honors her mother with her children on Fisher’s birthday.
“She was a brilliant, magical human, and I want them to know that. So despite the many emotions I have on these days, I try to celebrate the good parts. I’ll tell my kids funny stories about her, watch one of her movies, eat one of her favorite foods, have a Coke with a s**t-ton of ice.”
Lourd then shared a heartfelt and deeply moving reflection on her experience with grief. “Grief is a weird soup of feelings and there are a lot of ingredients in it that are hard to swallow, but ultimately I think the soup has made me healthier – more cognizant of how short life is and more appreciative of all the happy in my life.”
She ended the post with, “Happy birthday momby. I miss you and love you more than you could ever know.”
Fans and friends were deeply moved by the poignant post, offering words of love, comfort, and support in the comments to honor both Lourd’s strength and her mother’s enduring legacy, including many of her American Horror Story costars.

“The way you speak about grief, your family, life, and death, feels like we’re all talking as friends do, maybe, at 3 a.m. when the hangout is long over but people are lingering in the best way. It’s a breath of fresh air on this damn app. Your story and your family make the world a better place, a place where people’s struggles and triumphs won’t go in the dark,” wrote one fan.
“Thank you for sharing this. I’ve lost both of my parents (my dad to alcoholism specifically) and your words are always so beautiful and poignant,” wrote another Instagram user.
