How Well Do You Remember ’70s Medical Drama ‘Marcus Welby M.D.’?

Classic TV Trivia Marcus Welby MD
Everett Collection

The clash between slightly cranky but compassionate veteran family doctor Marcus Welby (Robert Young) and his young whippersnapper colleague Steven Kiley (a dashing James Brolin) provided the sparks that fueled the beloved 1969-76 medical drama Marcus Welby, M.D. But the show inverted the usual “young wildcat vs. staid older professional” dynamic so common in dramas — instead, Welby was the out-of-the-box thinker, whose unorthodox methods often ran counter to those of his strait-laced young coworker.

A number one hit, the show earned Emmys for both Young and Brolin, and brought public attention to a wide array of medical issues that weren’t common TV fodder at the time, from breast cancer to leukemia to sexually transmitted diseases.

Nearly 50 years after Welby and Kiley solved their final health crisis, how well do you remember the show?
