It’s always interesting when hit shows do crossovers … but it’s even more interesting when they cross over in real life. And one of the more unexpected real-life crossovers occurred between a titan of ’60s comedy and a cast member from one of the biggest dramas of the ’70s: Don Knotts from The Andy Griffith Show and Charlotte Stewart from Little House on the Prairie.

However, Knotts and Stewart’s relationship reportedly didn’t last long. Stewart, best known for playing schoolteacher Eva Beadles in the long-running series, opened up about dating Knotts in her memoir, titled Little House in the Hollywood Hills. She revealed why their relationship didn’t last, including their large age difference.

She wrote, “Another time, someone thought I should go out with Don Knotts, the actor who played Andy Griffith’s sidekick. Now look, who doesn’t love Don Knotts— a terrific comedic performer— but he took me to dinner at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, which was pretty old-school for my tastes. It’d be like going to The Brown Derby, which had been the happening spot in the ’40s. Don was 20 years older, of a different era, and we just didn’t click. I could barely make it through dinner.”

Could you see these two dating? Ultimately, they both moved on. Knotts married Loralee Czuchna around this time, his second wife. Meanwhile, Stewart married her second husband Jordan Hahn not long after.

Knotts’ daughter Karen once admitted that her father was a ladies’ man and had many relationships and affairs, including three marriages.

She said to Page Six, “There was never a woman who was angry at him. Like nobody said, ‘Oh, your dad didn’t come through with the relationship’ or anything. Everybody loved him and if the relationship was over, they became his friend.”
