Lady in the Lake
MOVIES!, 7:20am

Everett Collection
Robert Montgomery plays Raymond Chandler’s famous private investigator Philip Marlowe (although the character’s first name is spelled with two l’s here, for some reason) in this 1947 film noir adaptation of Chandler’s 1943 novel, The Lady in the Lake. Montgomery also directed the film, and he brought an interesting creative touch to it: Marlowe is mostly (aside from a couple of reflections) unseen by the audience; the tale is told via his first-person point of view, with the camera seeing what he does. Coupled with the fact that the film has almost no instrumental soundtrack, this production was especially unique for, and certainly ahead of, its time. The technique is mostly pulled off well, although it does take some getting used to. More confusing is the convoluted mystery plot, but that kind of comes with the territory with Chandler. Costarring with Montgomery are Audrey Totter, Lloyd Nolan and Tom Tully.

Suddenly, Last Summer
TCM, 12:30am (late night)

Everett Collection
Gore Vidal adapted Tennessee Williams’ one-act play of the same name (Williams was also credited on the screenplay but denied having any part in writing it) into this compelling and disturbing 1959 Gothic mystery film starring Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, both of whom received Best Actress Oscar nominations. Hepburn portrays wealthy dowager Violet Venable, who attempts to bribe Dr. John Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift), a young psycho-surgeon from a New Orleans mental hospital that is desperately in need of funds, into lobotomizing her niece, Catherine Holly (Taylor). Violet wants the operation performed in order to prevent Catherine from defiling the memory of her son, the poet Sebastian (Julián Ugarte). Catherine has been babbling obscenely about Sebastian’s mysterious death that she witnessed while on vacation with him in Spain the previous summer. The event has clearly traumatized Catherine emotionally but has not made her as insane as her aunt desperately would like her to be, since Violet herself proves thoroughly unable to process the awful truth of what really happened to Sebastian once Cukrowicz is finally able to get Catherine to fully remember it.

Tonight, TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by actress Rosie Perez, who introduces two films of her choosing. Perez will offer commentary on each title’s cultural significance and its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories, and her own personal reflections on them. The star has chosen a couple of cool films noir involving boxers: Killer’s Kiss (1955), starring Jamie Smith, Frank Silvera and Irene Kane, cowritten (with Howard Sackler) and directed by Stanley Kubrick, his second feature; and The Harder They Fall (1956), featuring Oscar-nominated cinematography and led by Humphrey Bogart in his final film role, Rod Steiger and Jan Sterling.

His Girl Friday
TCM, 12pm

One of the fastest, funniest and most quotable films ever, this 1940 Howard Hawks-directed screwball comedy is a quintessential example of that type of film from the genre’s heyday in the 1930s and early ’40s. When adapting Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s hit 1928 play The Front Page into this film, Hawks had the inspired idea of turning its star reporter character Hildy Johnson into a woman. The result is an immortal mix of hard-boiled newsroom setting and remarriage comedy, and Rosalind Russell as Hildy is a standout among cinema’s powerful women. She is matched in force only by her conniving but charismatic editor and ex-husband, Walter Burns (Cary Grant). Burns dangles the chance for Hildy to scoop her fellow reporters with the story of an impending execution in order to keep her from hopping the train that’s supposed to take her to Albany and a new life as a housewife married to bland insurance man Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy).
