Insider Cher’s Wedding to Gregg Allman: What Really Happened on That Day 50 Years Ago?

50 years ago, on June 30, 1975, Cher married the late Gregg Allman — but it wasn’t quite a fairytale wedding. In her memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part One, Cher opens up about the day, recalling, “I didn’t know whether my relationship with Gregory would last or not. I was living each day as it came. Then I found out I was pregnant, and we decided to get married.”
Just days after her divorce from Sonny Bono was finalized, she wed Allman in a small ceremony on Las Vegas. But even though the “Believe” singer made a beautiful bride in photos from the day, she admitted, according to PEOPLE, “There was nothing romantic about our wedding day.” She even tried to dissolve the marriage just nine days after the wedding, but the pair stayed together for the birth of their son, Elijah Blue, in 1976 and remained married until 1979.
How did Cher and Gregg Allman meet?
Cher and Allman first connected at a club in early 1975, when she was on a date with record mogul David Geffen. Even so, she ended up giving Allman her number, and the pair went on their first date soon after. On their second date, they went dancing, about which Allman once said he had to get drunk enough to know how to dance. However, the drinking and drug use would catch up to Allman and his relationship.
Cher has said that she “found that Allman’s heroin and liquor problems were too much for her to handle,” and this is what led her to file for divorce. She ended up giving him another chance, and then he filed for divorce, citing their move to Los Angeles as part of the reason their marriage fell apart. Before they truly fell apart for good, they did release an album together titled Two the Hard Way as Allman and Woman. Unfortunately, fans just weren’t into their sounds together and an attempted tour didn’t work well either. They divorced in 1978.

Even though their relationship was full of turmoil, Cher said, according to UCR, “Nobody ever made me feel as happy as Gregory did. God, he’s wonderful. I don’t understand why he can’t see it. He’s the kindest, most gentle, loving husband and father. But then, he forgets and everything goes to shit.”
Ultimately, Allman died at the age of 69 on May 27, 2017 from complications of liver cancer. Cher attended his funeral and only had good things to say about him.
