TCM Celebrates Star of the Month Gary Cooper in June! Plus: Get a FREE Printable Monthly Schedule

Actor Frank James Cooper, better known as screen icon Gary Cooper, is celebrated each Wednesday night this June on Turner Classic Movies with several of his memorable films. The two-time Oscar-winning films, including Sergeant York and the western High Noon, will be included. Cooper’s famously strong and silent screen persona, and his understated acting style, can be seen in several famous instances right away on the first evening, June 4, in a lineup that includes his Best Actor Oscar-nominated performances in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and The Pride of the Yankees (1942), and his Best Actor-winning title role in Sergeant York (1941).

The June 11 lineup includes two Ernest Hemingway adaptations led by Cooper — For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), which earned him the fourth of his five Best Actor nominations, and A Farewell to Arms (1932) — as well as the two films he made with Marlene Dietrich, the romantic drama Morocco (1930), which earned Dietrich a Best Actress nomination, and the romantic comedy Desire (1936).

On June 18, the Cooper celebration begins with one of his most iconic performances, in the legendary Western that won him his second Best Actor Oscar (which was accepted on his behalf by John Wayne since Cooper couldn’t attend the ceremony): High Noon (1952). That evening’s lineup also includes several other, perhaps lesser-known, Cooper-led Westerns, including The Hanging Tree (1959), Dallas (1950) and Springfield Rifle (1952).

Among the highlights of the final night’s lineup June 25 are three comedies that start things off: Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife (1938), costarring Claudette Colbert, and two 1941 titles pairing Cooper with Barbara Stanwyck, Ball of Fire (which earned Stanwyck a Best Actress nod) and Meet John Doe.
