Will John C. McGinley Return for the ‘Scrubs’ Revival? He Says… (Exclusive)

John C. McGinley has played countless roles over the course of his 40-year career — but to many fans, he’ll always be Dr. Perry Cox, the hard-charging mentor of J.D. (Zach Braff) on beloved medical comedy Scrubs. The series, which ran from 2001 to 2010, airing for seven season on ABC before jumping to NBC for its final two, is in the process of being revived, with Braff the first cast member to officially sign on. But, as McGinley told Channel Guide, he is also planning to participate in the revival.
McGinley, whose 2024 Hallmark+ holiday series Holidazed will air on the Hallmark Channel this summer as part of their “Christmas in July” programming, told Channel Guide that he’s staying very busy with work, and anticipates being involved in the Scrubs revival soon.
“We’re going to be wrapped by the middle of August [for the new HBO medical sitcom also starring Steve Carell],” McGinley told Channel Guide, “and then presumably I’ll be going off to do (I’ll be overlapping with) Scrubs. There’s no offer yet, but there will be. That’s an exciting thing for a 65-year-old white male to be able to say in 2025. We’re not exactly in vogue.”
Though Scrubs co-star Judy Reyes, who played nurse Carla on the show, has not formally signed on to the revival, she recently told TV Insider that she was open to reprising the role: “Sure! I would love to know what Carla’s doing 25 years later.”
In an October 2024 interview in Deadline, Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence said of the revival, “I think it’s getting really close to being figured out, and I think in a good way. Big chunks of the creative team behind the camera, and most of it from in front of the camera, are all super invested and excited, so very close.”
After making his small-screen debut in 1985 on the soap opera Another World, McGinley has worked tirelessly, appearing in dozens of films like Platoon, Point Break, The Rock, and Office Space, and shows including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Burn Notice, Chicago P.D., and Stan Against Evil.
