Angela Cartwright Reminisces About Filming ‘The Sound of Music’ 60 Years Ago

60 years ago, the hills came alive with The Sound of Music. While many of the film’s stars have passed away since it premiered on March 2, 1965, several of the younger von Trapp children are still alive and well, including Angela Cartwright. Cartwright, who played Brigitta von Trapp, recently shared throwback photos of the beloved film’s premiere in honor of its anniversary.
In the photos, the stars are all dressed in their finest, and Cartwright reminisced about how they arrived in a horse-drawn carriage. The film premiered at the Rivoli Theater in New York City.

She shared, “All of Hollywood turned out for the opening, and we were all so excited to see the entire movie on the screen with our families by our side. It was a thrilling night and the beginning of a 60-year adventure. Who knew? The movie that just keeps on giving us happiness and another family for life.”
In other recent posts, Cartwright pulled out some memorabilia from the filming of The Sound of Music. She explained that while they were shooting the movie on location in Salzburg, her mother bought some placemats and had the cast and crew sign them.

She also spoke about being grateful for the filming location, because she and the other kids were able to visit places in Austria as part of their schoolwork when they were not filming. She said, “We visited places all over like the Salt Mines, Ice Caves, the surrounding Lake District, the Eagles Nest just to name a few places. We went exploring when we had days off and [our teacher] made the country we called our home for three months interesting and fulfilling. After these field trips we had to write a booklet about where we had been, complete with drawings and memorabilia.”
These days, Cartwright lives a quieter life at 72 years old but is set to appear in the film Ralph’s Perfekt Christmas as a grandmother.
