‘Jaws: The Exhibition’ to Open at L.A.’s Academy Museum for 50th Anniversary

JAWS, 1975
Everett Collection

Fifty years ago, Jaws taught a nation that it wasn’t safe to go back in the water (and invented the summer blockbuster film while it was at it). To celebrate the anniversary of one of Steven Spielberg‘s most famous films, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is opening an immersive new exhibition celebrating the 1975 movie. Beginning in September, Jaws: The Exhibition will take fans behind the scenes, sharing original storyboards, props and even animatronics.

It is the first ever exhibition of this size at the museum to be focused on just one film. The exhibit will take fans through the film scene by scene and showcase never-before-seen archival materials and interactive elements. The museum worked directly with Spielberg, The Amblin Hearth Archive and NBCUniversal Archives & Collections to showcase items and explore the film’s cultural impact for its special anniversary.

Jaws, based on the novel by Peter Benchley, was the first of its kind in the 1970s, setting off the tradition of summer blockbusters and changing modern action filmmaking.

Almost as famous as its cultural impact was the film’s extremely difficult shoot. The mechanical shark they had to use for the film caused many production difficulties, and Jaws took 159 days to film, much longer than its anticipated 55 days.

Jaws: The Exhibition is organized by Senior Exhibitions Curator Jenny He and Assistant Curator Emily Rauber Rodriguez, with Curatorial Assistant Alexandra James Salichs, according to the museum’s website.

The exhibition is set to open on Sept. 14, 2025, and run through July 26, 2026. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is located in Los Angeles and currently holds the sole surviving full-scale model of the shark from Jaws. The exhibition is free with museum entry. Will you visit the museum to see the exhibition?

Jaws will be celebrating its 50th anniversary all year with different products and events, including a new version of the Game of Jaws. NECA unveiled a modern update of the classic 1975 game where you must remove 16 items from Bruce the Shark’s mouth without triggering his jaw.
