John Wayne Spent His Free Time Doing Wholesome Outdoor Hobbies

Marion Robert Morrison, better known as John Wayne or “the Duke,” was an American actor many considered a hero, especially in Western and war films. While he appeared in around 179 movies and television shows during his long career, he was just an outdoorsman in his free time. Although he passed away in 1979, his social media account keeps his legacy alive, often sharing stories of his life with his loved ones, including his children.
In a recent post, his son, Ethan Wayne, shared more about who his father was when he wasn’t working. He said, “Most of his free time was spent bird hunting, fishing or just exploring. He was usually active somewhere, usually outdoors doing something at least a little adventurous, and it was always with good friends.”

While this sounds pretty simple, he also put his fortune to good use and went on adventures on his 136-foot yacht, a converted wooden naval minesweeper called the Wild Goose. The post adds that Wayne would go on trips to Mexico, British Columbia and Alaska in the Wild Goose, stopping to fish, snorkel and water ski with his friends and family who came along.
If you’re going to be in Texas, you can visit a hand-made model of the Wild Goose on display at the John Wayne: An American Experience Museum in Fort Worth Stockyards, Texas.
