You’ve heard the hit Michael Jackson song “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough.” Its funky sound has made people dance all over the world. But did you know that iconic drummer Sheila E. helped him create that epic beat? During a recent interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Sheila E. confirmed that she was part of this classic tune’s recording process — and that she used glass water bottles to create the sound you hear at the beginning of the song.

Sheila E. explained that Jackson and his producer Quincy Jones asked her to come in to add some drum beats to the song. Jones said that Jackson was using his mouth to make sounds for the song, and they needed some additional percussion. She shared that she brought in seven cases of percussion instruments, but she didn’t end up needing them.

“I’m known for just making stuff up,” Sheila E. said. “If I see something, I’ll just make music with it.”

She listened to the song, and then “got two bottles for that song, and put water in it. And I tuned it actually to the song.” Hudson was shocked that she could tune the water — a shock that turned to amazement when Sheila E. showed Hudson and the audience an example of how she created that amazing sound using just water, glass bottles and the sticks you use to play the triangle.

Just goes to show how talented Sheila E. truly is! Did you know that she appeared in the song “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough?” Listen to it below and see if you can hear her part!
