When Is the the Rose Bowl Parade On This Year and What Is Its History?
For over a century, the Rose Bowl Parade has been a classic New Year’s Day tradition — both for those who attend in person in Pasadena, California, and in more recent years, for those who watch it on the small screen. But while you likely have seen the parade, and know about the floats and the celebrity guests, you probably don’t know much about its history.
The Parade began all the way back in 1890, thanks to the Valley Hunt Club of Pasadena, who wanted to showcase California’s mild winters. By 1895, the Tournament of Roses Association was formed to oversee the festivities.
Over time, as the parade grew in popularity, it became an extravaganza featuring elaborate floats, spirited marching bands and equestrian units. Each float must only use natural materials and they often become living works of art. While it is generally held on January 1 each year, there is a rule that it will never be held on a Sunday, a tradition that began to avoid frightening horses outside of churches and continues to this day.
Where to Watch the Rose Bowl Parade in 2025
This year marks the 136th annual Rose Bowl Parade, which will have the theme “Best Day Ever!” President of the event, Ed Morales explained, “The 2025 theme celebrates life’s best moments – those unexpected times that bring a smile, warm our hearts and fill us with joy. From a once-in-a-lifetime experience to the simplest pleasures, each is indelibly etched into our memory. Together, we celebrate where we’ve been and what we look forward to. It’s about family, friends, and community and what we have to celebrate – and to be thankful for. On New Year’s Day and throughout the year, let’s celebrate the times that make up our Best Day Ever!”
This year’s Grand Marshal is sports icon Billie Jean King, who will make her grand entrance to the Elton John song “Philadelphia Freedom,” which was written in her honor.
The 2025 Rose Parade starts at 8am PST (11am ET) on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. NBC will broadcast the parade, which will also be streamed on Peacock. Will you be watching or visiting in person?
