When Is ‘White Christmas’ Airing on TV This Year?

The 1954 Bing Crosby Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney classic White Christmas — a madcap musical which follows two veterans who become a song-and-dance duo, and finally meet their match in a pair of performing sisters — was once a holiday TV staple. In recent years, however, the film has been airing a bit less frequently. But while you can’t catch the movie throughout December as you once could, it will be airing on TV this Christmas — including a mini-marathon on Christmas Day. The only catch? You’ll need cable to watch it.

White Christmas will run on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, at 2am EST on AMC, for any of you who are staying up late keeping watch for Santa.

Then, the film will run in a mini-marathon on Sundance TV on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, at 12:30pm, 5:30pm and 10:30pm EST.

And if you’re too busy putting on a show to save the old inn, and can’t watch at any of these times? You can stream White Christmas on Amazon Prime or AMC+.

Did you know?

Originally envisioned as a vehicle that would pair Crosby and Fred Astaire, Astaire passed after reading the script; Danny Kaye was actually the third choice to play Private Phil Davis.

And Astaire may have been right about the script. After Kaye signed on to the film, writers Mel Frank and Norman Panama were brought on to rewrite the screenplay. Panama described the rewriting process as “torturous,” while Frank said that “it was the lousiest story I’d ever heard. It needed a brand new story, one that made sense.” The men rewrote the script over the course of two months, and they must have done something right — White Christmas earned $30 million (against a budget of $2 million), and was the highest-grossing film of 1954.
