Willie Nelson Finally Opens Up About Recent Health Scares & Show Cancellations
91-year-old Willie Nelson has continued performing and even releasing new music despite a few setbacks. He canceled a few of his shows over the summer due to health reasons but was not very specific. One of the cancellation statements read, “We regret to inform you that Willie Nelson is not feeling well and, per doctor’s orders, has been advised to rest for the next four days. He is expected to make a quick recovery and join the Outlaw Music Festival tour next week. In the meantime, Lukas Nelson and the Family Band, along with a few guests, will perform a special set to include Willie’s classics and other songs.”
Now, Nelson has said that he is doing quite well. He recently talked about his health when discussing his new album called Last Leaf on the Tree, which features themes of life and death. He shared, “Well, I’m 91 plus, so, you know, I’m not worried about it. I don’t feel bad. I don’t hurt anywhere. I don’t have any reason to worry about dying. But I don’t know anybody who’s lived forever. I take pretty good care of myself.”
He joked, “I feel like I’m in pretty good shape physically. Mentally? That’s another story,” seemingly referring to his decades of smoking marijuana. While he quit smoking it because of breathing issues in recent years, he admitted that he still consumes other kinds of cannabis including edibles.
While he said he never imagined he would age into his 90s, he does believe that cannabis is one of the reasons he is still around. He called it a “good medicine” and added, “I’m glad that it’s being accepted around the country, and I’ll be glad when every state in the union legalizes it, because I think it will be healthy for everybody.”
Nelson’s 76th solo album, and 153rd album in total, is out now.
