Turncer Classic Movies Ruth Roman Star of the Month collage

After a number of usually uncredited bit roles in movies starting in the early 1940s, actress Norma Roman — better known as Ruth Roman — earned a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer — Female with her performance as the wife of Kirk Douglas’ lead character in the 1949 sports drama/film noir Champion, and continued in films, onstage and on television through the 1970s.

The star’s big-screen work will be celebrated each Tuesday night on Turner Classic Movies with lineups of her most memorable films. Champion, of course, will be featured; it airs second in the initial lineup on Nov. 5. Airing just before it and kicking off that night’s lineup is the TCM premiere of Belle Starr’s Daughter (1948), a Western with Roman as the title character (named Cimarron Rose) in one of her earliest major roles.
