It seems to be the year of music documentaries. There are so many coming that we compiled a list, and now another documentary celebrating an iconic band is in the works. Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is directing a new doc on the band Earth, Wind & Fire, responsible for hit songs “September,” “Let’s Groove” and many more. It is reportedly coming in 2025 and will showcase the band’s ongoing legacy and cultural impact.

Questlove was given access to the band’s archive, including visual, audio and written material. He said, “Having been baptized in the Afrocentric joy river of this powerhouse unit, I’ve learned about them, I’ve learned about us and, more importantly, I’ve learned and rediscovered myself in the process. I’m so excited to be part of the process of preserving their positive but VERY vulnerable and real story of Soul, Self & Struggle.”

The band members, including the estate of the late Maurice White, are in support of the new documentary. Surviving band members Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson added, “We look forward to this in-depth journey of our band and are so excited to have Questlove directing the documentary.”

As of now, there is no word on a release date or where it may be available to watch. However, we do know that it is being financed by Fifth Season, which has worked on several documentaries, including ones about Paul McCartney and Mary Tyler Moore. Questlove, the Roots drummer, is a seasoned performer but is now making his mark as a director. His directorial debut Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Film Independent Spirit Award, a Peabody Award and the Sundance Grand Jury Prize.

“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to give audiences unfettered access to one of the most successful and culturally meaningful music groups in history,” said Mary Lisio, EVP of non-scripted development & production at Fifth Season. “We have tremendous confidence this will be a captivating exploration of the groundbreaking group and its rise to global superstardom.” Let us know if you’re interested in watching this documentary when it comes out!
