‘Goonies’ Stars Shut Down Rumors That 1985 Cult Classic May Be Getting a Sequel
If you’re a fan of ’80s movies, The Goonies is likely to be near the top of your list of favorites. The 1985 film was written by Chris Columbus and based on a story by Steven Spielberg. It follows a group of kids who live in the “Goon Docks” of Astoria, Oregon. As they hope to save their homes from foreclosure, they discover a treasure map that leads to the fortune of a 17th century pirate named One-Eyed Willy. Of course, in any good treasure-hunting movie, they must find it before the bad guys.
Every few years, there are rumors of a sequel to the beloved film. Now, several outlets are reporting that a sequel is in the works with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027. Unfortunately, the director Richard Donner and several of the original cast members including John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Mary Ellen Trainor, Keith Walker and Lupe Ontiveros will not be involved as they have since passed away.
No word yet on if any of the surviving cast including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton will be involved, but an insider source at The Sun said, “The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but it’s finally been given the go-ahead to move forward. The team is excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to a new audience.” Now, cast members Feldman and Plimpton have taken to social media to say that they have not yet heard about a sequel and this is fake news.
Feldman wrote, “2’SDAY, IS #GOONIES2 REAL?! EVERY1 IS ASKING…I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL U 100% NO! I HAV NO INFO THAT A SEQUEL IS IN THE WORX,” while Plimpton said, “People, there is no Goonies 2 script, there is no one ‘attached,’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.”
Just a few years ago, several of the cast members reunited virtually and Spielberg opened up about why there hasn’t been a sequel so far. He shared in 2020, “Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water. The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre, I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the ’80s.”
The rumors are fueled by a poster going around social media with details that say Spielberg will be directing the sequel, which will take place 40 years after the original. Astin’s Mikey will recruit the old gang to recover a secret stash of the treasure that he hid back in ’85. The surviving stars may be attached to the film as well as Daisy Ridley, Catherine O’Hara and Elijah Wood. For now, it seems that these are just rumors. Interesting that this came out just as the highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel hit theaters!
