Willie Nelson & Live Nation Help Fund Aspiring Musicians With ‘On the Road Again’ Initiative
Willie Nelson is continuing his long and successful career with a new album coming soon and an ongoing tour, but he is also making sure to help the next generation. Nelson has always aimed to help new musicians and fight for fair compensation for artists. Just last year, he teamed up with the company Live Nation for an initiative called On the Road Again, named after one of his hit songs.
On the Road Again offers $1,500 in gas and travel expenses for new artists, in addition to their performance fees at Live Nation-owned and operated clubs. They will also allow the artist full profits of all merchandise, helping to create a livable wage for emerging musicians on the road.
They will also give $5 million to Crew Nation, a global relief fund that helps provide financial assistance to live music crews around the world. The program as a whole is meant to help aspiring musicians fund their dreams and give them the financial support to keep pursuing their dreams without needing to fall back on another job before their big break. As of now, Nelson and Live Nation have helped over 4,000 musicians. Their initial goal was to help 4,000 artists but they show no signs of slowing down.
The initiative is especially important as the landscape of music changes rapidly. While artists used to make a lot of money from releasing new music, digital downloads and apps like Spotify have made it harder for artists, especially new ones, to make a living. Tours are where they make money, but new artists don’t often make a lot from performing until they get their big break.
“Touring is important to artists, so whatever we can do to help other artists, I think we should do it. This program will impact thousands of artists this year and help make touring a little bit easier,” said Nelson.
