Cyndi Lauper Recalls Being Pitted Against Madonna in the ’80s

Unfortunately, the music industry loves to pit similar artists against each other, especially women. Back in the 1980s, two of the women succeeding in the pop music scene were Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. For years, there were rumors of a feud between the two ladies and Lauper is finally speaking out about it.

Lauper and Madonna both released albums in 1983. Lauper released her She’s So Unusual album which featured her hit song “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” while Madonna released her debut album of the same name.
While promoting her upcoming farewell tour, Lauper addressed the alleged feud and admitted that she feels the media and music industry pitted them against each other. She said, “Yeah, isn’t that sad? There can only be room for one. What the hell was that? I didn’t like it.” When asked if she ever talked to Madonna about the struggles, she admitted, “Nah, I didn’t think she liked me that much” but added that she wished they could have been friends.

Last year, Cher opened up about a feud between herself and Madonna as well. She did confirm that there was some bad blood between them in the past but they have since moved on. For a while, Madonna featured an old interview clip of Cher saying that Madonna was “mean” during her tour.

Cher explained, “She can be. We buried that hatchet a long time ago because I called her something so much worse, and she forgave me. But I give her this: There’s no one like her that had their ear to the ground and knew everything before anybody else. I mean, she knew what was coming, and she was right on it. I always felt that was her greatest gift: that she could know the trends before any of us.”
