Facehuggers, Chestbursters & Xenomorphs, Oh My! The Full Trailer for ‘Alien: Romulus’ has Arrived

'Alien: Romulus'

It’s hard to believe it’s been 45 years since we witnessed the very first facehugger spring from an egg in 1979’s Alien. And now, those terrifying extraterrestrial critters are once again terrorizing young colonists in space in the all-new tinnitus-inducing trailer for Alien: Romulus. Directing the latest installment of this enduring sci-fi/horror franchise is Fede Alvarez, best known for helming Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe. Original Alien director Ridley Scott returns as producer.

Just seconds into the trailer, it’s very clear that Alvarez is taking the franchise back to its roots. There are so many sights and sounds that echo the first two films: the atmosphere processor from Hadley’s Hope, the beep of the motion tracker, the humming layers of blue mist, a Ripley-esque protagonist, pulse rifles, the very familiar ship corridors that resemble the ones from the Nostromo—everything’s in check. There are even hints of the fan-favorite video game Alien Isolation. But most of all, we get our first good glimpse of the adult alien warrior and it seems the biomechanical features that are more in line with H.R. Giger’s original creature designs are making a very, very welcome return.

What’s even best about the trailer is not too much is given away. It seems Alvaraz is doing his best to save some of the best surprises for us in theaters. As for the plot of Alien: Romulus, this is a standalone sequel set between the events of Alien and Aliens. And sorry Sigourney Weaver fans, this is a Ripley-less adventure. She and Jones the cat are still floating somewhere in space during the events of Romulus, but what we know is this: While scavenging the remnants of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers encounter the deadliest life form in the universe. As you can tell from the trailer, facehugging and chestbursting ensues, making way for full-grown Xenomorphs to wreak havoc.

The cast of unlucky colonizers includes Cailee Spaeny (Civil War), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), and Spike Fearn (Aftersun). Fede Alvarez co-wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2), one of his frequent collaborators.  Now let’s just hope this sequel is more than just fan service and that it actually can live up to the first two movies. So far, there’s already been one promising endorsement, and it comes directly from the guy who started the whole franchise. According to Alvarez, Ridley Scott has seen Alien: Romulus and said “It’s fucking great.”

Alien: Romulus lands in theaters on August 16, 2024.
