Billy Joel Serenades Ex Christie Brinkley With a Special Song
Billy Joel recently celebrated his 100th show at the famous venue, Madison Square Garden in New York City. He continues to play there and last week, his ex Christie Brinkley was seen enjoying herself during the show. A fan shared a video of Brinkley dancing to Joel’s hit song “Uptown Girl,” which is reportedly written about her. The two were seen smiling at each other, proving that despite their breakup decades ago, they are still good friends. They share one daughter, Alexa Ray Joel.
The song was released in 1983, just two years before Joel and Brinkley wed. Apparently, there is some drama with the song. Supermodel Elle Macpherson said that she was dating Joel while he was writing the song but he broke up with her before the tune was complete. Around that time, he seemingly met Brinkley, who stars in the music video for “Uptown Girl.”
Macpherson said “I think it’s [about] all the uptown girls, put it that way,” and Joel backed up her theory. In his biography called Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography, he said that he wrote the song about models in Manhattan but changed the song from “Uptown Girls” to “Uptown Girl” after he started dating Brinkley, as he was focused all in on her.
A fan who captured the video of the show wrote, “Billy Joel wrote ‘Uptown Girl’ about his then-partner Christie Brinkley. Tonight she watched him sing the song he wrote about her to all of Madison Square Garden.” They added, “40 years later and your ex man is still grinning at you like that while he sings the song he wrote about how rich and hot you are?” Something to smile about indeed.
