Adam Sandler Showed Christopher McDonald a Script for ‘Happy Gilmore 2,’ Plus Julie Bowen Confirmed Her Character’s Relationship
We have exciting news for Happy Gilmore fans! Actor Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the film, confirmed that Adam Sandler told him he was working on a sequel. McDonald added that Sandler showed him a first draft of the script after fans demanded it. After he broke the news, representatives for Sandler reportedly refused to comment about it, staying tight-lipped about the project. Maybe McDonald let the cat out of the bag a bit too early? Now, it has been confirmed that the sequel is in the works with Netflix.
He shared on a radio show, “I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. Fans demand it, damn it!”
The 1996 film Happy Gilmore starred Sandler as an angry former hockey player who finds a talent for golf. He joins a golf tour with the help of ex-pro golfer Chubbs Peterson (the late Carl Weathers) to make money to save his grandmother’s home and beat the cocky McGavin. Sandler cowrote the film, which became a cult classic for many comedy fans. It featured some impressive guest stars including Ben Stiller, Julie Bowen, Kevin Nealon and the late Bob Barker.
Comedian Nick Swardson said that he joined the cast of the sequel as a 1950s golfer, alluding that the film will share flashbacks to the ’50s. Swardson revealed that filming will begin in September, despite not being shown a final script yet, calling it “the most Sandler thing ever.” Sandler has also joked that his longtime friend and radio personality Dan Patrick should join the film’s cast.
