Another day, another remake… this time the 1984 film based on a book of the same name, The Neverending Story, is set to get an update. See-Saw Films and Michael Ende Productions (the book was written by the late Michael Ende) are behind the remake. The partnership has been given the rights to create the film by Ende’s executor Dr. Wolf-Dieter von Granau.

The book and later the film centers around a child named Bastian Balthazar Bux who discovers a magical world of Fantastica inside a book called “The Neverending Story.” Many children and adults have found comfort in the story over the years, with its unique creatures Atréyu, Falkor, and more.

Producer Iain Canning shared about the upcoming remake, “The story is both timely and timeless, and really has an opportunity to be told in a fresh way. And part of the specialness of the book is that you can go back to it at different ages in your life and find different levels of meaning. So how wonderful that we have this opportunity to do a fresh perspective that will have new layers and meanings. We just believe that every generation deserves their own journey into Fantastica.”

He continued, “Emile and I have always been very clear that, if we were going to move forward on our journey, it had to be something really special that we were passionate about and connected to emotionally, so when this opportunity came about we just thought: this would be so magical. Over our 15 years we’ve been very careful — whether it be for ‘The King’s Speech’ and the audience that loved that or ‘Lion’ and the audience that loved that, or ‘Heartstopper’ or ‘Slow Horses’ — about making quality material and that audience responding to it. This is such an opportunity to bring all that skillset together and do a full quadrant spectacle of a film.”

The next steps include seeking distribution partners and starting to find the cast and filming locations. The production team is reportedly hoping to film some scenes in Germany since the book originated there and the 1984 film was shot at the Bavaria Studios in Munich. Stay tuned for more details but first, tell us, do you think The Neverending Story should get a remake?
